Endless respect for Trina Robbins. Here’s a quote from “A History of Underground Comics” (Estren, 1974), in a section about how the guys in communes etc still expected the women to do all the cooking, cleaning and laundry. #RIPTrinaRobbins
One of the few female cartoonists, Trina, when asked why there are so few women doing underground comics, says, “Maybe it’s ’cause they think, like so many others, that underground comics consist solely of porn. Maybe they’re frightened of a field that’s mostly men. Women are brought up to be not very aggressive. Fact is, I really don’t know. As for me, I love drawing — and I consider it a challenge.” Trina’s friend and sometime collaborator, Willy Mendes, is more forceful: “That’s /the/ answer to your ‘why not more women’ question: TIME!! Their un-liberated men don’t lift their lousy fingers and the incredible amount of bullshit work in life allows women /no time/.” — A History of Underground Comics (Estren, 1974)
