"Okay." It remained hard to tell from Mary's manner what she herself thought of the situation. The Sister turned to look out her window, so Reka let the matter go and did the same. Riverbridge was set into a wide, bowl-shaped rise on the bank of the White River, gently sloping down to the water's edge. Because of this, many of the buildings were either built on wedges of poured stone, or lifted up on stilts on one side with the other side built into the earth behind it. There was one main road in or out, four wagons wide, paved with large river stones. Smaller streets arched around the contours of the rise, and from what Reka could see from the windows each building had a door on either side, one at street level and another at the top of a small flight of stairs that lead to the level below. It all gave the town a stair step appearance that she found delightful. The main road led into what she assumed was the town square, though this was more of a large half circle, running all the way to the docks reaching out into the water. Most of the ferries were docked at this side of the river, bobbing gently in the current, while on the other she could just barely make out more buildings surrounding a space mirroring this one. A statue of Integris stood on either side of the road, marking this also as the town market. Stalls littered the square in clumps of three or four, and a few folk going about their shopping paused to watch or wave as they passed. They stopped on the far edge of the market, at the base of a building on stilts taller than Arlo could stand in the driver's bench. As Reka exited the carriage a woman of middling years came down the last of the steps and beneath a sign that read "The High Water Line"

14 - Reka The eighth day on the road brought the Pilgrimage to the town of Riverbridge. As the carriage came to a stop and she stepped down from the stairs to the cabin, Reka took a moment and opened herself to the world around her. It was quickly becoming her habit to do so whenever she had the chance. Away from The Tower City, she'd started to appreciate the difference in the spirits out here in the countryside. It wasn't that the City was devoid of spirits, far from it, but outside it they were so much more nuanced. The air spirits felt pushed along by the last breath of a great storm somewhere else. The water spirits of the wild streams and ponds they'd stop at still had the chill of mountain ice melt woven through them. The trees and bushes had the permanence of old growth, their spirits vibrant with life. At night she'd watch the fire spirits dance from log to log and in between the sparks rising into the air, each one the seed of a roaring wildfire that would turn their play into devastation. It was all so amazing to her. The first few days away from the city she'd done little else but sit with her aura open, drawing in one spirit at a time and bathing in the depth and complexity of it. When she could be drawn into conversation, it was all she wanted to talk about, despite feeling like whatever description she gave was woefully inadequate. How could she put into words the difference between the feeling of a water spirit that came from a sandy bottomed stream and another from a stone churned rapid? What were the right feelings to compare to how an earth spirit interpreted the shallow roots of grass against the deep roots of a tree? She was too busy losing herself in the different flavors of freedom each air spirit brought with it to attempt conveying them to anyone else. If nothing else, the novelty of each of these new feelings had already made this entire trip worth leaving the Tower City.

15 - Arlo As they trundled down the road again, Arlo was thinking fondly of his short time in Riverbridge. Reka and Mary had made a tour of the town for the day they'd been stopped, coming back with bags of treats for him and the men of the Guard, along with more than a few extra for themselves. Well, mostly Reka. Mary hadn't shown much interest in anything sweet or new after the first day. Arlo had caught her looking sadly at a few things when she didn't think he was paying attention, so he'd taken the liberty of packing a small bag of them and hiding them in his own luggage to surprise her with later on the road.

23 - Reka Reka was slowly losing her mind. She knew when setting out this trip would take weeks. She thought she'd planned for that. Packed a number of books, a journal, even some games. Plenty to keep her occupied. She read all of her books by the time they'd hit Riverbridge. Never much of a writer, most of her journal entries were a handful of lines at most. The games were better lately, now that Mary had started to be more comfortable around Arlo, but there were only so many times they could play the same thing before it was more tedious than fun. Mary on her own was fine company, but Reka never felt comfortable talking about anything but surface level topics. She desperately wanted to know more about the Church and the Faithful, but when she got anywhere near those topics all the emotion would drain out of Mary's face and she'd go quiet. She would look painfully uncomfortable whenever the subject of spirits or magic came up, which was all Reka wanted to talk about now that she had realized how unrefined her skills had been before. Stories of Reka's youth were the safest bets, but even then, Mary had so few frames of reference for anything having been so sheltered in the Church. Those stories were also a minefield for Reka. The one subject she feared most was Tala. She knew that if she started talking about her something would slip and she still didn't know how Mary would react. She wasn't as closed minded as Reka would have thought given her upbringing, but between what her father had told her about the Church and the fact that Mary still struggled with the subjects of the other Alliance members, she just could not risk talking about her partner too much. That, even more than the distance and time, made her heart ache from missing Tala.

There re towns and villages but they’re usually on river crossings (like Riverbridge) to ferry travelers, or where roads meet.

The smallest villages are insular but by choice. Some people just want to live off the land but they don’t forget they’re part of wider society.

Moriko's home is the city of Riverbridge, which as the name implies, exists on both sides of a large bridge crossing a major river. This river is also the border with the elven queendom, and Riverbridge has a very high population of half-elves. Moriko's parents are alchemists who own their 🧵➡️→

Moriko could feel power moving around them, but even more dangerous was the weight of his will. She'd contested her will against another's during training or a spar, but she'd never felt pressure like this before, and certainly not during intimacy. The being underneath her might appear like a mortal, but the mind behind those golden eyes held the weight of more years than anyone she'd even met before. If he'd wanted to crush her will he could have already. So she took a chance. "None," she answered and smiled at his raised eyebrow. "We both know you could do anything with me, so I'm giving you permission. Let me find out what that anything is really like." Mordecai drew her down into a kiss that set her body aflame. Swift, deft motions on his part left her arms bound behind her by the robe she'd been wearing and her skin exposed to his touch and his gaze. He expertly teased until she was desperate for release, and when he demanded her complete surrender, Moriko gave it. Kazue's surprise traveled across their link, causing the two of them to look at her before she spoke. "Wait wait, did you say Riverbridge? As in Kuiccihan and the Azeria forest? Where are we and how far are we from the clan?" Moriko was clearly just as surprised when she said, "Wait, you're from the Azeria clan? We're right up against the Raincatcher mountains, about half way between the clan and Riverbridge. Um, I followed a rabbit from the southern road, so I am not sure if we are quite within the official borders of Kuiccihan still; we might be in unclaimed territory." Pure joy moved Kazue into action as she grabbed Moriko and kissed her. In the moment it took her to realize what she'd just done, Moriko had responded by pulling Kazue closer and returning the kiss with enthusiasm. Warmth bloomed and spread from the center of Kazue's body, but it was also entangled with the desire she felt from Moriko and Kazue couldn't clearly tell which emotions were hers and which were Moriko's. She started to panic and Moriko immediately stopped, pulling far enough away to create some space but touching still, just enough to make sure Kazue didn't lose her balance. "Are you alright?" Moriko asked gently. "I didn't mean to scare you." The panic subsided and was quickly replaced with embarrassment. "Yeah, um, I'm sorry, it wasn't that, I just, um, couldn't tell our feelings apart and that was what was scary." The kitsune yelped as Mordecai reached up over his shoulder and pulled her forward, curling her over his shoulder to land her in his lap, then snuggled her into place. “You haven’t quite thought that out yet. You have drawn in lots of rabbits, but we only have so much room for inhabitants. The rabbits will do what rabbits do, and before long we should expect to have lots of cute little guests. They can live back there quite happily and provide all the energy the warrens need, and eventually, many of them can become future inhabitants.” Oh, she hadn’t thought about the bunnies breeding. That made sense. Um, why was he still looking at her like that? And leaning a bit closer? Um, was he going to – Kazue tensed briefly, then grabbed onto him and closed her eyes as Mordecai kissed her, sinking into the sensation. Moriko’s kiss had been a little sweeter and lighter, but brief. This, this she could lose herself into.

They both had a good chuckle and Mary at least put on a tight smile. After a moment she leaned forward and pointed to the fire, "What was that for?" There was a pot at the edge of the fire. "Oh," Reka felt a gentle heat rise in her cheeks that had nothing to do with the fire, "l was going to make us tea, but I got a little distracted." Mary stood and looked more closely at the pot. "There isn't any water..." She felt the heat spread to the top of her ears. "There was when I put it there." Mary picked up a piece of leather Reka had left out to grab the handle by and lifted the pot for closer inspection. "There's... there's char in the bottom? Princess, did you burn your water?" Arlo let out a thunderous laugh that must have been heard back in the Tower City and Reka looked away from them both. "I said I got distracted, okay?" Arlo continued laughing to the point that she was surprised he was managing to stay in his seat. She peeked at Mary and even she was holding back a smile and shaking slightly. "'II fetch the kettle and some more water." "Please forget it. You should relax. Gods, you haven't been able to sit since we made camp." "No, no, it's fine." Mary took a deep breath to steady herself. "| really enjoy a cup of tea in the evening, I'd be glad to make it." Mary wandered off in search of the kettle while Arlo descended into wheezing giggles. Reka was about to get up and kick him when Mary returned with a sloshing kettle and three tin mugs. She placed everything on the ground near the fire and asked Reka, "Where's the tea?" She reached down and handed Mary a small tin. She opened it with a delicate sniff of the contents, then breathed in deeper after a small look of surprise. "Oh this smells amazing. Where did you get it?" "Back in Riverbridge," Reka answered. "Cally the innkeeper recommended it, and I forgot about it until tonight." "Ahhhh," Arlo sighed, finally back under control. "I wouldn't mind spending a few more nights under Ms. Cally's roof." Thank the Gods Mary didn't catch on to what he meant. "It was a very pleasant place," She said, looking wistfully at the tea canister. "I quite enjoyed the bath and the ice cream." Reka thought she saw Mary's eyes widen and her expression go slack, but she was half turned away and the fire was throwing strange shadows across her face. She went about picking out three little sachets of tea and placing them into each of the mugs naturally enough, and turned to set the kettle over the fire with a steady hand, so Reka dismissed it as a trick of the light. Soon the kettle was giving off a low whistle and Mary picked it up by Reka's scrap of leather to pour hot water into each mug. They all waited a few minutes, the scent of tea leaves in the air, and then Mary passed Reka a mug. She turned to Arlo and paused for the barest moment before offering him his cup. "Here you are, Captain." Arlo accepted his with a gracious little bow and a smile. They all blew over the steaming surfaces of their tea and waited a moment to try and let it cool. Arlo broke first, taking a deep sip before letting out a contented sigh. "Sister, if you will allow me, anyone who makes such a fine cup of tea may just call me Arlo. There's no need for titles between friends." Reka looked at Mary staring wide eyed at Arlo, unsure of what her expression was at this point. She looked equal parts hesitant and eager, but there was something in the back of her eyes Reka couldn't place. Mistrust? Fear? The silence stretched on before Mary looked down into her tea and said, "Thank you Arlo. And you... you can call me Mary, if you wish." Arlo smiled and raised his cup and said, "To friendship, and to you, Mary." They all drank, and Reka let the taste of the tea wash over her tongue. It was earthy and sweet, and she could taste summer fruits among the leaves. She reached down to the tin of tea and passed it to Mary. "Here, you clearly know better than I do what to do with this. You should have it." Mary looked at the tin in mild surprise before reaching out to take it. "Thank you, Prin..." she looked around the wagon quickly, craning her neck, "Thank you, Reka." She smiled one of her true smiles when she said it, delicate and gentle as the rest of her. They all sat in silence, sipping occasionally, until Arlo gently parted the curtain around their contentment. "Now let me tell you about the 'Mushroom Incidents', and why I'm glad you're doing the cooking and not Reka. "Incidents?" Asked Mary incredulously. Reka drew her legs up onto the seat of her chair and began to feel the warmth at the top of her ears again.

She herded Mary and Reka towards the tent Integris indicated was theirs. Inside was spacious enough for the three of them, and contained a pair of bedrolls in front of two large travel bags with a large bucket of still steaming water between them. "It seems one of us will have to share." She purred while going over to one of the bags and opening it. Inside was clothing that all looked like what she had been wearing around the Tower City after Reka had left for Megiddo. "Careful Mary, Reka hogs all of the blankets." Reka spoke while diving into the other bag and pulling fresh clothes of her own. "I have nothing on Mary." Her voice was light as she held up a fine emerald green shirt. "We shared a bed in Riverbridge and when I woke up in the morning she'd wrapped herself in all of them." "Oh?" Tala turned so she was sitting on the floor of the tent, looking up at Mary. The other woman's face appeared to be trying to pale and go scarlet all at once as she locked her blue eyes on Tala's. "It-it was only for a night..." Mary stammered out as she stepped away from Tala. "Two nights." Reka interjected, clearly not seeing or hearing the state Mary was in. "Remember? You got to try ice cream and we had that wonderful day in the market." Tala turned to see her partner's back still turned and pulling her ruined dress from Megiddo over her head and throwing it into the far corner of the tent. "Where we got the tea I gave you? It's a shame that's probably back in Megiddo." Reka reached down next to the bag with her clothes and began draping a towel over herself. Only then did she turn around, see Mary's face, and start to blanch herself. When Tala looked back to Mary the poor woman was staring holes in the floor. "I brought it with me. I'll make some later." "That sounds delightful." Tala said, desperate for some way to calm Mary down. Turning back to Reka she chided as sweetly as she could, "Perhaps I'll have to steal Mary away for a little alone time. You're making me jealous, … It didn't. The battle over Mary's face was finally won, and she went white as a freshly laundered sheet. She threw her bag to the ground and stammered something about going out to ask for another bed roll and towel before fleeing the tent like a pack of hounds were on her tail. "Damnit..." Reka hissed, throwing her chemise after her dress. "What was I thinking, bringing up Riverbridge." She flopped to the floor of the tent, frustrated tears welling in her eyes. Tala scooted closer and pulled Reka into her arms. It felt good to be so close to her. Between fleeing for their lives, needing to remain hidden, and being conscious of Mary, they hadn't been as physical with each other as they would normally be. "I'm sorry too... I didn't know what to say. I know nothing happened between you two, but I don't think she realizes that. Not that I'd mind now as long as you said something first." Reka jerked straight up and almost free of her embrace, shocked realization painted across her face. "Oh Gods I didn't even... No Mary wouldn't want... damnit that's even worse." Tala felt utterly lost now. "Why else would Riverbridge be a sore topic?" Reka turned herself so that her back was to Tala and fell back into her chest. "We never talked about it but... the first night we were there, I think something happened between her and Jonah. She didn't seem right when we went back to the inn and she must have thought I was asleep. She was praying, and crying. I didn't know what to do so I just reached out and put my hand against her back. Then she fell asleep. I wanted to ask her about it but it never seemed to be the right time. There... there were a lot of things like that."

He didn't have any particular fondness for older or younger women, but Cally had made sure he appreciated the exuberance and creativity that experience and age could bring on. He had deeply enjoyed the two nights they'd spent at the High Water Line and looked forward to passing through Riverbridge again. What he missed the most now was the complete absence of Father Jonah. The longer they traveled together, the more he was coming to despise the man. It wasn't any one thing that did it, but a host of small annoyances that added up to him resenting every moment the priest was present. They had picked up a few new pilgrims in Riverbridge, a handful of dour looking boys just shy of their majority, and Jonah had asked in a way that made it a demand that he show off again for them the next morning like he and Reka had done before. Not wanting to just stomp around and smash things like some hulking brute, he'd refused. Every morning since Jonah brought the boys around to watch Arlo, Reka, and the guards train, but hastened to shepherd them away when Arlo made overtures to let the boys join them. This morning Jonah finally got what he wanted. The mood had struck Arlo to go full contact again with Reka, and the priest had been ecstatic. Even stranger was that much of his delight seemed to be coming from the fact that Arlo had taken the spar over Reka. She'd actually had him backed into a corner the whole time, and had over extended directly into what he had meant to be a parry, not a blow. He'd asked her about it after the fact and she'd laughed, just saying that she was still getting used to wild spirits, which apparently were more potent away from the City. At least they hadn't broken any more of the training staves. But Jonah didn't seem to care that his victory had been a fluke. Arlo didn't understand at all what the priest had said to his followers about the bout, but the extolitary way in which he said it made it obvious he was bragging on Arlo's behalf. Now he was peppering Arlo with questions, seated next to him on the driver's bench of Reka's carriage. "And what drew you down this path, the way of the bellator?" Jonah had that look he got a lot, like he was looking at something so far past you that you weren't even there to him. Arlo kept his eyes on the road ahead. "I'm not sure what you mean, Father." "Bah!" Jonah made a sweeping, dismissive gesture with his hands. He was more animated than usual today. "Again your language fails me. A bellator is more than just some common split knuckled fighter. He is a man who has mastered himself so as to be as much a weapon as his sword or spear. A man who seeks victory above all challengers. In a bellum like I described to you before, true bellatores become the most storied of men, and are elevated above all others."
