Major fish rescue on the River Mole:: After the river dried up near Dorking thru Mole Gap .. water in isolated pools >28°C & oxygen hit 30% the EnvAgency, with RiverMoleRiverWatch & local anglers, saved hundreds of fish—inc 5lb pike & 3lb chub—relocating them upstream to healthier flow.

Combined snow & rain events make it difficult to predict river flow, as the melt can result in a sudden increase - the Mole flow rate at Gatwick is now approaching 8m3/s which pretty high!

(Thanks to #RiverMoleRiverWatch for the info)

This is the area affected by the warning 👇

I've know for a long time how good volunteering is for you..

Especially when it gets you outdoors, meeting like-minded films, doing some science, and really starting to make a difference on an issue that matters.

Everyone should have a go!

Great article in BMA including us! “At first glance it’s an unlikely example of preventive health but River Mole River Watch is the very definition of tackling problems upstream” thanks Dr Gill Orrow for your support linking river and habitat to human health. thedoctor.bma.org.uk/articles/hea...

👏 Well done to #RiverMoleRiverWatch for your outstanding work this year. Just back from a v successful AGM. Great speakers, clear (& mercifully rapid) trustee reporting, tea on tap, & a walk with picnic by the river. 🏞️

This is super, Simon. I’ve followed them all. Not sure I’m a river hero but do add me if you’re including #rivermoleriverwatch volunteers. 🙋‍♀️

Nitrate next. This one is done on a marine detector and has 20% NaCl solution added. There’s also a factor applied to the results. For now the reading is 18.7ppm.

Back indoors. Next job is to check the storm discharge map provided by Thames Water to see if sewage has been released in this stretch in the last 48hrs. And the results are… phew.

Sample taken. Heading back inside to complete the testing. All across the catchment this weekend we will be measuring ammonia, phosphate and nitrate by colorimeter.

River Mole looking pretty murky today. And running fast for this section. Floating pennywort, an invasive plant, is back and spreading.
