#rmse
I used RMSE to compare regression models. Since RMSE measures prediction error, a lower validation RMSE indicates that the model's predictions are closer to the actual values.

Today I tuned `eta` in XGBoost. A model with lower training RMSE did not have the best validation RMSE — a useful reminder to evaluate models on unseen data when tuning hyperparameters.

One lesson from today's XGBoost experiment: the model with the lowest training error wasn't the winner. Comparing validation RMSE gave a better picture of how the model performs on unseen data.

I learned that deeper trees don't automatically mean a better Random Forest. In my experiment, a smaller `max_depth` achieved a better mean validation RMSE than deeper alternatives.

I experimented with `n_estimators` in Random Forest. Increasing the number of trees improved validation RMSE at first, but the improvement became much smaller as more trees were added.

Results: embeddings beat hand-crafted acoustic-prosodic features (and their combination). Best models reach RMSE ≈ 0.9-1.5 on the 1-7 item scale, with no clear differences across tasks (free speech, picture description, reading, recall...). Audio only.

First, what RMSE hides: participant-level R² ranges 0.07-0.38. We explain a minority of the variance in ratings. On a scale where most ratings are low, “error < 1.5” sounds better than it is, we should be comparing w predicting the mean?
October 28, 2026 at 4:44 PM
So the rating and the audio describe different speech. If clinicians rated an interaction the model never heard, RMSE near one point is bounded by between-interview variance as much as by model error. Did any site rate and analyse the same recorded interview, so label and signal share one stimulus?

Random vs scaffold splits: single-seed baselines on 6 chemistry datasets
This is exactly the kind of baseline the field needs more of — thank you for running it systematically across six datasets, @woongworks. A few thoughts on extending this: **Single-seed variance:** The single-seed approach clearly shows the _direction_ of the effect, but a 5-seed or 10-seed run with standard deviations would make the results more citable. The FreeSolv RMSE jump from 1.82 → 4.95 is striking, but some of that variance could be from the specific scaffold partition chosen. Confidence intervals would separate “scaffold splitting is consistently harder” from “this particular partition was hard.” **Implications for synthetic dataset design:** This finding generalizes well beyond chemistry. When designing synthetic evaluation sets for any domain, the split strategy should match deployment reality. A model that scores 0.965 AUC under random splits but 0.817 under scaffold splits is _overfit to known scaffolds_ — which matters enormously for prospective deployment on novel compounds. **The QM9 case is interesting:** The smaller gap there might be because QM9 properties are more determined by local functional groups than scaffold topology — suggesting split-strategy sensitivity depends on what the label _captures_ , not just the molecular representation. **Practical recommendation:** For any published chemistry ML benchmark, reporting random-split results as “upper bound (in-distribution)” and scaffold-split results as “lower bound (out-of-scaffold generalization)” frames them as a meaningful range rather than forcing a single choice. Would you be open-sourcing the evaluation scripts? Would be useful infrastructure for the community to run on new datasets.
