A new study published in Nature Communications on September 15, 2026, challenges the common saying that 'all roads lead to Rome.' Researchers from Aarhus University in Denmark, led by Professor Tom Brughmans, have conducted extensive research on the Roman Empire's road system, revealing that several other cities were better connected by road than Rome itself. The study, part of a larger digital atlas project called 'Itiner-e,' mapped nearly 186,000 miles (300,000 kilometers) of Roman roads. The findings indicate that major cities like Antioch, Ancyra (modern-day Ankara), Byzantium (modern-day Istanbul), and Corinth were better connected to the road network than Rome. The research identified the empire's 'most important intermediary route' by land, which did not run through Rome but followed the North African and Levantine coast past Antioch and near Ankara, crossed over to Europe at Constantinople, and moved through the Po Valley and Milan into France. The study also found that Rome's location on the Italian Peninsula made it less central to the road network, as the peninsula was described as 'an appendix to the empire's road network,' with Rome situated halfway down this appendix. The research noted that Roman roads tended to be straight when the terrain allowed, but not as straight as modern roads, which are built to avoid sharp turns and facilitate faster travel. Additionally, the study highlighted that while Rome was not the best-connected city by road, it held significant importance for sea and river transportation due to its central location in the Mediterranean, making it a key hub for water transport. The researchers emphasized that future studies should integrate findings on sea and river transport with their road network analysis to better understand Roman transportation networks as a whole. The study's authors, including Pažout et al., published their findings in Nature Communications, providing new insights into the structure and lasting impact of the Roman road system.

So far I've tried Vector>Analysis Tools>Line intersections to create points at the intersections, and then SAGA>split lines at points, but QGIS kept crashing when it was attempting the second half. I've also tried SAGA >split lines with lines, but this also crashed QGIS. The result I'm hoping for is to be able to export a shapefile with the existing road network, with the network divded into individual strings at their intersections.
