Rockefellers and robber-barons
There's something weird happening where The Discourse about the tariffs is about how Trump is trying to return us to 1950's and 1960's, the manufacturing heyday of America, but he's not! He' been very very explicit about this. He wants to return us to the 1890's. That's a different project!

Robber Barons are trying to rob the public of their things.
The credulous language with which the legacy media is describing an effort by billionaires to loot the federal government.

Privatizing prisons makes the more cruel. Privatizing the post office betrays a promise of access made at nation's founding.

Tariff wars and robber barons, white supremacy and Comstockery, sewage in the water and measles on the march.

Truly, he has Made America Gilded Again.

Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good.

I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

this is at least extremely consistent with their ideological commitment to "America should be ruled by robber barons"
Peter Navarro on comparisons of Trump's tariffs and Smoot-Hawley: "The better comparison by far is the McKinley era, which was the height of the tariff power and its contribution to our manufacturing economy. We were a country based on tariffs revenues up until 1913 when the income tax came along."

Somehow, the future is both going to be a dystopian techno sci-fi hellscape AND we're gonna have coal and measles and robber barons and a permanent underclass.
