100 times, this. People rag on 4Kids and Saban, but like, a lot of the edits made were the way shows like Pizza Cats, Pokemon, and Voltron got on TV in the first place.
The fact that Star Blazers and Robotech credited their JP staffs was seen as revolutionary for a reason.

But if you ever look back at this time period and feel baffled by some of the creative or marketing decisions, you have to understand that they aren't just trying to appeal to children. They're selling to the nervous older folks that had the wallets.

La línea 'Robotech Archives' de Titan Comics era un proyecto ambicioso para recopilar material clásico que llevaba décadas disperso. Sin embargo, se quedó a medio camino. Al menos la parte correspondiente a 'The Macross Saga' sí quedó completada

As a kid who loved Robotech, a teen who came to love Battletech, and an adult who learned how much Harmony Gold screwed up licensing Macross in the US, this whole thread tickles me pink.
Thank you for sharing this, I'm grinning ear to ear!

It's not even that he got them wrong per se
In Robotech: The Roleplaying Game he notes the Japanese model names in the appendix
In Robotech II: The Sentinels each Destroid has its model name listed under the Class.

Horrifically dating myself but somewhere between Lisa Hayes (Misa Hayase) and Miriya Parina (Milia Farina) from Robotech (Macross) especially as the "Do I want to be you?" faded a bit when they both threw themselves at kinda mid man-children

You can look up the concrete details on this, but I recall reading how Macek had an incentive to not exclude the Robotech IP to boys, and this was their way of peaking interest in other markets at the time. youtu.be/TBi_yxI3UKc

I was 10 in 1979 when Captain Cosmic started playing Star Blazers on his show on KTVU-2 San Francisco.
It was Star Blazers that made me take notice that Japan could make some pretty awesome cartoons.
