I’ll never forget being in a group meeting for a Star Trek project many years ago w/the Roddenberry Foundation and when I talked about the Star Trek community, one of the Roddenberry fellows on the team said there was no such thing. Yet, look at the outpouring of love and support right now.

Star Trek's creator Gene Roddenberry was a humanist. He set out to imagine a future where reason, kindness and collaboration framed stories about human nature. Sir Patrick Stewart brought one of its best-loved captains to life.

Take our free tour of science fiction's humanist history:

The less said about episode 28 of Ultraman Dyna, the better.

It's like Gene Roddenberry came back from the dead and learned Japanese just to write this. It would be right at home in Season 1 of TNG.

Gender essentialist bullshit with the most hideous kaiju designs ever.

Roddenberry liked him, even as he was looking at other actors like Roy Thinnes, Mitch Ryan, and Yaphet Kotto(!!!). There was even a screen test with a toupee, and in the end Roddenberry went against his more capitalist impulses and went for the best actor for the role.

You could’ve told me “this is what Roddenberry wanted TNG to look like originally” and I’d believe you.

I'm seeing a bit of whitewashing around Gene Roddenberry and Patrick Stewart's casting as Jean-Luc Picard.

Roddenberry was very commercial-minded and balked at casting a bald man, but Robert H. Justman was insistent after seeing him perform Shakespeare. Rick Berman supported this.

[November 2nd, 1986] Bob Justman sent a memo to Gene Roddenberry proposing a new opening sequence for Star Trek. The concept involves a cosmic camera movement from Earth through the solar system and the galaxy.
