One of the most successful pedestrian streets in the world, the Strøget in Copenhagen, was filled with cars until a 2 year pedestrianization pilot project in 1962. The opposition argued “no cars means no business,” but the street has been a massive retail success, the city’s busiest shopping street.

In 1981 this is a service road alongside Rokin, with two lanes of parked cars and we can see cars parked in the distance on the main road too. Today it is a large pedestrian space, with a statue, seating and greenery. A musician plays. Car parking in the distance replaced by bike parking.

Rokin, Amsterdam in 1979 and today. A powerful reminder to politicians everywhere - design your city's streets for the kind of traffic you want to encourage

Two pictures together. In the first Rokin has two lanes of southbound motor traffic. In the modern day picture taken in the same location southbound motor traffic has been removed altogether with only a cycleway, being used by an adult and a child. A large bowl with flowers in it is alongside on a much larger footway.

This is Lou Drenthe on a terrace in Amsterdam in 1930, portrayed by Nola Hatterman. Drenthe (1901-1990) was a jazz player in the blossoming scene in Amsterdam in the 1930s. He married Sara 'Letty' Gans. In the 1950s they opened a parfume shop on the Rokin. #blackhistorymonth #amsterdam750 #day17
