Disnakertrans Riau Sebut Upah Minimum 2027 Dibahas Akhir Oktober
Pekanbaru (Riaunews.com) - Dinas Ketenagakerjaan dan Transmigrasi (Disnakertrans) Provinsi Riau menanggapi sejumlah tuntutan Federasi Serikat Pekerja Metal Indonesia (FSPMI) Riau dalam aksi unjuk rasa di Gedung DPRD Riau, Kamis (1/10/2026). Salah satu tuntutan buruh berkaitan dengan upah minimum tahun 2027. Kepala Disnakertrans Riau Roni Rakhmat mengatakan penetapan upah minimum, baik Upah Minimum Provinsi (UMP) maupun Upah Minimum Kabupaten/Kota (UMK), memiliki aturan dan formula yang harus menjadi acuan.

Again 100% on the same page here, and it's one thing I've been noting in any interviews I give. I'd just rather explicitly say El Nino (RONI) + climate change than bringing ONI into it to avoid confusion.

This has the benefit, to me, of framing impacts during non-El Nino years too.

RONI mainly captures the dynamical aspect--by design! And I think it's reasonable to use in that context.

But to convey full effect of EN+CC, which is most relevant info from a practical perspective, we probably do need to look beyond; otherwise, we're looking at EN only in hypothetical isolation.
October 1, 2026 at 1:03 AM
That's the challenge here--a lot of folks are using RONI values to extrapolate real-world 2026 impacts. But doing so is missing the accumulated effect of pan-tropical warming due to climate change, which is arguably quite important from hydrologic cycle and temperature perspective!
October 1, 2026 at 1:00 AM
Well, to me, it depends on if you're talking about measuring the strength of El Nino vs. the impact of El Nino + climate change. Unless ONI captures some bit of global ocean warmth/moisture unrelated to RONI or climate change that significantly impacts the hydrological cycle.

I think that's right! And it is my understanding that Kevin has also argued that global mean subtracted metrics (like RONI) can be misleading re: big picture. I agree, though I do still think it can be useful in the right context. Hard to find a one-size-fits-all metric in nonstationary world!
October 1, 2026 at 12:11 AM
That's fair; my main point here is to differentiate these two indices & clarify to those claiming that "everyone should always use RONI, solely, becauseit's official" that doing so misses a lot re: global impacts.

It's also true there are better imetrics than "temp in Nino3.4 box" to begin with. :)

No El Niño in modern times has been this east-based this early in the year, to say nothing of at this strength.

Techically, NOAA's ONI and RONI are also both meant to be 3-month trailing averages, another poor choice (because smear and lag), but almost everyone plotting those at the moment is doing weekly or daily data.
IMO ONI was a poor choice and NOAA was correct to deprecate it. We should too.

But Swain is right that we need more than just the relative measure(s); the *actual* tropical Pacific SST matters too. I think the best measure of that is the traditional Niño3.4 ... vs a fixed, recent baseline.

Things:
1. NOAA RONI appears similar to the Australian BOM's rNiño3.4 — anomaly vs a fixed baseline (1991-2020), relative to the all-tropical-oceans SST, with a fudge to preserve the prior stats.
2. But NOAA *ONI* is not like trad Niño3.4. ONI uses a centred 30-year baseline adjusted every 5 years.
Wading into the "relative versus absolute" El Niño intensity debate: I genuinely think both are important--and I think we lose important information if we focus solely on one vs another. And both, as of late Sep, have now reached or exceeded record levels! [Thread]
