Free apple rootstocks! We bought a few different bundles of rootstocks this year, and when cut to graft we stuck the discarded tops as cuttings on the heat table… now they’re all rooting & looks like we’ll have potted rootstocks for free next year 🤠 #fruit #trees #foodforest #permaculture

Lovely M9 apple rootstocks from Walcot Organic Nursery. A good, consistent thickness, just right for grafting up a couple of dozen more cordon apple trees for the #allotment collection.

I'm planning to graft some more apple trees for the allotment next month, I got the rootstocks last month and I’ve just collected some “scions”.
I've grafted onto the upper branches of a tree before and I've been practicing various techniques, hopefully I'll manage to get some of them to work 🤞.

🌱 We know how rootstocks impact chosen varietals, but who thinks about how the scions influence rootstocks?
Allowing the suckers to flower resulted in a funny yellow stripe on this rose blossom.

Like, it's only fairly recently that we can cross cherries and plums. But once you have a bridge, all sorts of weirdness opens up. I believe peach-almond hybrids only go back a century, but are important for rootstocks.

The first of the rootstocks arrived today, 40 ViruTherm2 pear rootstocks that are tolerant of pear decline disease. Now heeled in awaiting grafting next month.
I said I would not graft much this year, but another 100 stocks should arrive soon 🤦

A tiny whip and tongue graft, Che onto Osage orange rootstock. Excited to do a lot of these this spring! Che is a fruit tree related to fig and mulberry. We collected the Osage orange seeds for these rootstocks from some huge old trees in Central Park NYC. #grafting #fruit #foodforest #permaculture

I think it's also important to preserve old varieties, but as they are not on ther own roots, it's equally important to think about new rootstocks. Before commercial rootstocks were a thing, seedlings were used, so locally adapted seedlings would be great rootstocks too (if the fruit is not great)!

This afternoon I have taped up my thumbs and will be #grafting a dozen or so new apple trees, sitting out in the sunshine, down on the #allotment.

Big ups to the Yurok, Karuk, and Klamath peoples, who gathered seeds and rootstocks and slips of native plants, used nursery techniques to multiply them, and then hand-replanted the basins to restore the original ecologies.

I have a secret stash of rootstocks that should be used, and a couple taller failed grafts I can topwork!
In future (once the nursery is empty) I’ll just plant rootstocks and field graft them rather than all this faff of moving trees around 🙂

Indeed. We do have a very good climate for apples, it has to be said. A lot of the most popular contemporary rootstocks were developed in Merton.

Digging some birch-leaved pears we started from seed this year. Nice and pencil thick, ready to be used as rootstocks for grafting Asian pears in the spring. Snapdragons in the background hanging in there late into the season. #trees #gardening #nursery #roots #flowers #fall

Our young Che tree in the food forest. Che is a Z5 hardy tree related to mulberry & fig. It bears large melon-flavored berries. It’s also related to osage orange, which we are now growing to use as rootstocks - hoping to graft many little self-fertile Che trees to plant and offer in the future! 🌱
