Consider Kirchner’s Der Rote Turm in Halle (1915).
Image of the 1915 oil on canvas Der RoterTurm in Halle by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938); depicting the market square at Halle (Saale) with its Roter Turm (Red Tower). The square base of 15th-century neo-Gothic bell tower, to the right of Marktkirche’s four towers, is depicted in an (imaginary) reddish hue – as are the empty streets delineating the square and the lone tram crossing the otherwise deserted scene. The view is plunging and unfolds parallel to the plane of the painting. Clouds of smoke in the background evoke the proximity of war.
