Because hell is empty and all the devils are here, Polymarket is apparently now running real-life ads encouraging you to gamble on vaccine mandate reversals (h/t @emilylip.bsky.social)

Australia’s timeline:
• 1971: Rubella vaccine introduced.
• 1981: Mumps vaccine introduced.
• 1983: Measles–mumps combined vaccine introduced.
• June 1989: Measles–mumps–rubella (MMR) vaccine officially introduced into the national schedule.
Thing is, my Grandad had autism BEFORE they were invented

Geez. I wonder what would happen if rubella shows up again?
Especially given that RFK Jr's own cousin (on his mom Ethel's side) was affected by congenital rubella syndrome. Ethel was carrying older brother Joe at the time, and was terrified that she'd been exposed too.

There IS, however, a clear link between the MMR vaccine and a lack of measles, mumps and rubella.

And so any adult who wasn't vaccinated or infected as a child can get measles as an adult, even when pregnant.
Congenital rubella will likely happen again too, since it's the R in MMR. Rubella is not as dramatic an illness, many infections are without symptoms, but CRS is tragic.

“The measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine is well-tested, highly effective, and provides long-lasting protection,” said MN Commissioner of Health Brooke Cunningham, MD, PhD.

Watched Apollo 13 for the first time. Reminded that a crucial incident was astronaut Ken Mattingly being exposed to rubella and thus being scratched from the flight. Rubella vaccine available in US from 1969, Apollo 13 was in 1970. Wonder if this prompted NASA to require vaccination.

How are you for Rubella?

Well over a thousand cases in Canada already this year, per capita we are far worse than America at this... Stupidity isn't exclusively an American trait (as much as we like to joke that it is)

I live in the worst of it, one riding over from the birth of the fucking Freedom Convoy 🤦

How far the GOP has fallen. Hilleman was responsible for vaccines against measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis and chicken pox.

I hope congenital syphilis (about which I was taught q1975) is now history & congenital rubella - in spite of RFK Jr’s efforts to bring back measles polio mumps diphtheria pertussis maybe even TB & smallpox!)

German Measles (ger: Röteln) isn‘t the Measles Virus. German Measles also known as Rubella Virus is Different from Measles. Your luckily didn’t got the real Measles.

Rubella has its own long-term effects. I can't imagine what that would be like if a baby was born infected.

Right, this is an unfortunate bit of nomenclature. We still think of rubella (also covered by the MMR vaccine), aka German measles, as a bad infection to catch in pregnancy because of high risk of fetal complications.

I do wonder if this is basically the Gen Z/Younger Millennial version of the anti vaxx phenomenon where public health campaigns to eliminate harm were so successful that you forgot about those health hazards in the first place (lung cancer and rubella, respectively).

There are so many tragic accounts of what rubella did to babies in utero. Talking with moms who gave birth before the MMR vaccine protected the population (including my own mother, a public health nurse) -- it was really scary.
It didn't spare famous people. Poor Gene Tierney and her daughter.
