More than 300 rural hospitals could close due to Trump/Republican Medicaid cuts.

Rural areas will also be hit especially hard by food stamp cuts.

And public broadcasting stations in rural areas could shut down if the Senate passes its rescission bill.

I thought Republicans loved rural America?

No one is talking about congestion pricing in rural areas.

Also, as we all know, there are lots of rural areas that don't vote GOP.

Coincidentally, they're all the rural areas that aren't majority-white.

We do ourselves a real disservice pretending the "rural-urban divide" in politics is real. It ain't. Full stop.

I hope that I am not right, but I do not think that the GOP fucking over rural areas will result in rural areas blaming the GOP: instead they'll double-down on blaming imaginary cultural enemies and resentment/fantasy about how the cities must be worse.

Rural areas hit hardest by catastrophic storms are the same areas now in danger of losing their hospitals after Trump’s Medicaid cuts just passed.

I feel pretty misunderstood by people living in rural areas, and yet mysteriously, this isn’t considered a problem.

I’m sick of putting up with this idiotic display of obeisance to chucklefucks simply because they live in rural areas.
Republicans control all 3 branches of government. Even when they don't, both parties pump out constant rhetoric about "real Americans" living in rural areas.

The entire premise of this article is a conservative-fluffing myth. Cities have more political power because that's where most people live!

Josh Hawley acted like he was going to fight the Medicaid cuts that will hurt many thousands in his state - most his voters in rural areas.

Then he ran away.

Texas Republicans are now running scared, afraid they will lose rural voters. Rural Texans are now flexing their muscles & are strongly opposed to Data Centers.

They were already mad at the Republicans for not wanting to fund public schools. The fact is private schools don’t work in rural areas

"Rural voters" never means voters in rural areas like, say, the Mississippi Delta.

the result of the last two decades plus of rural areas developing a massive drug problem while quality of life substantially improved in urban areas was to make people in rural areas believe that if they had it bad, the cities, by definition, must be hellholes

It's remarkable that the Biden administration spent money on rural red areas, which then voted enthusiastically for Trump, who has now repeatedly made moves to screw over those exact same areas.

Just going to point out again that our arbitrary political rules permit Republicans to attack urban areas with impunity but strictly forbid the faintest whiff of condescension toward rural areas by Democrats
“The first thing I thought was, ‘What is she talking about?’” said Bryan Fish, the vice mayor of Culver City, whom everyone calls Bubba but doesn’t look like someone whom everyone calls Bubba. “The only crime here,” he added, “is like the $18 strawberry at Erewhon.”

I’ve been organizing in rural areas since the first Trump administration. Rural Dems can make the difference in races at the top of the ticket.

Republicans have all of the electorate they’re ever going to have. Organize to turn out 5% to 10% more Dems in rural spaces. Watch what happens…

I'm in a red rural area. I still cannot understand why rural areas continue to vote against their best interest.

Angry rural white dudes think cities are violent crime-ridden hellholes, when crime rates are higher in rural areas -- thanks largely to... angry rural white dudes.

Rural areas are overwhelmingly Republican.

Urban blue voters need to understand that if farm workers could vote, rural farming areas would turn blue overnight.

But they can’t. Stop punishing rural America just because only landlords control the vote.
I mean, here's you answer.

People aren't "voting to end this stuff" as much as we think we are.

That's... why I'm beating the drum as loud as I can with this whole "Hi, urban blue voters! Farm workers need you to commit to ending slavery thing."

Here in CA we had a ballot measure to abolish slavery and the state voted to KEEP IT instead.

After watching Prop 8 pass I realized you cannot trust CA to vote in favor of human rights, despite stereotypes about us being some kind of liberal commie hellscape.

Between medicaid cuts and restricting the immigrant doctors who actually serve rural areas, I've never seen a political movement so laser focused on killing their most loyal voters.

“There’s gonna be a big presence in DC, but it’s not just DC — I want to see this in rural areas, in suburban areas, in urban areas, in red states, purple states, blue states. It’s going to take all of us.” - @ezralevin.bsky.social

If we want to win in rural areas, we have to come back to rural areas…

It’s not easy, but it is doable. Small gains in rural spaces make a big difference in races at the top of the ticket. Come back. We can do this.
March 24, 2025 at 8:05 PM
On the flip side, I’ve noticed that many people who are most willing to apologize for the voting and political choices of rural Americans….

are those who have either never actually lived in a rural/GOP area, or are people who are recent-ish transplants from urban/blue areas to rural areas.

Folks in rural areas: The Big Beautiful Bill will close your local hospitals after the Medicaid cuts take effect. Tell your senators your community needs them to stay open!

This is the dynamic across most of America: Liberal cities generate revenue, which state governments then transfer to benefit conservative rural areas, whose residents despite city-dwellers and consistently vote to harm them. But politicians endlessly pander to rural voters and demonize cities.
Another critical piece of missing context in this story: tax dollars flow from the MSP metro to rural Minnesota. People in the city subsidize the lifestyles of people living in the country minnesotareformer.com/2023/12/04/t...

The poor, simple creature doesn't understand that the underpopulated rural areas, where Republicans have the power, report the vote quicker. The more populated urban areas, where Democrats have the power, take longer to report.
Trump: "I happen to think there was a lot of cheating going on in Virginia. We were leading all day long -- the Republicans. All of the sudden there was a ballot drop."
