As someone who dealt many years w/ students who couldn't read cursive writing but needed to do research using records in cursive, I support teaching cursive writing in public schools.

Also want to encourage parents to write paper diaries of trips, encourage kids to write paper diaries, pass down.

Jacksonville’s and Tulsa’s experiences indicate that pouring resources into policing can help reverse a murder spike (as seen with their 2023–24 declines), yet Miami and Fresno remind us that you can have relatively low crime with or without progressive policies if other conditions (economy, community cohesion) are favorable. Conversely, Washington D.C. and Baltimore show that entrenched problems will keep crime high despite any reforms, unless those root issues are tackled. Governance, Policy, and the Public Safety Puzzle What role has governance —Democratic or Republican— truly played in these crime trends? The honest answer, supported by data, is that governance choices do have an impact, but often in nuanced ways, and they interact with broader forces beyond any city hall’s control. It’s tempting for partisans to declare, ❝Democratic mayors lead to crime❞ or, alternatively, ❝Republican areas are actually more violent.❞ Reality is more complex. On one hand, some policy differences between blue and red cities did correspond with different crime outcomes in the short run. For instance, many Democratic-led cities implemented reforms around 2016-2019 aimed at reducing mass incarceration — easing bail requirements, reclassifying certain felonies to misdemeanours, and scrutinizing police tactics. Critics argue these changes led to more repeat offenders on the streets. In the immediate aftermath, a few cities like New York and San Francisco saw jumps in specific crimes (e.g. theft, assaults) that conservative commentators seized upon. At the same time, Republican-led jurisdictions doubled down on ❝law and order.❞ They maintained higher incarceration rates and, in some states, even passed pre-emption laws to block local reforms. It’s notable that blue states spend 33% more on policing per capita than red states on average, but red states generally have higher incarceration rates — reflecting different approaches. When the 2020 crisis hit (pandemic, economic dislocation, social unrest after George Floyd’s murder), initially crime rose everywhere — red and blue alike. But by 2021–2022, a divergence became visible: the magnitude of the surge varied. As discussed, homicides rose more dramatically in a subset of liberal cities — many of them ❝progressive❞ cities like Oakland, Portland, and Seattle saw murders jump 50–100%. Meanwhile, many conservative-led cities had smaller increases or even declines. Why? One hypothesis is that some progressive prosecutors (e.g. in Los Angeles, Philadelphia) were less aggressive in charging offenses during COVID, whereas conservative DAs kept a tighter lid. Additionally, police morale and staffing fell more in cities where officers felt politically vilified. In Seattle and Minneapolis, for example, police departures in 2020 were huge, hampering crime response. By contrast, a city like Miami did not see the same collapse in police ranks or authority. Governance style —whether emphasizing reform versus traditional enforcement— likely played a role in those dynamics. However, it would be overly simplistic to attribute crime trends purely to the mayor’s party. Far larger forces are at play. Socioeconomic factors (poverty, unemployment, education levels) and demographics (young adult populations, etc.) strongly predict crime rates regardless of city leadership. For example, many of the highest-crime cities of any stripe have high poverty and inequality — conditions that breed violence unless addressed. Gun availability is another decisive factor: states with loose gun laws saw greater flows of firearms onto city streets, contributing to higher homicide rates. (It is telling that 8 of the 10 states with the highest murder rates in 2022 were Trump-voting ❝red states❞, and researchers found murder rates have been significantly higher in red states than blue states every year this century. This suggests state-level culture and policies, such as gun regulation, have a huge impact on violence, often overshadowing what city mayors do.) Indeed, analysts note that people in New York City or Los Angeles are statistically safer from homicide than residents of many rural or suburban areas in red states. So, when Republican politicians claim ❝Democratic cities = more crime,❞ they ignore the inconvenient reality that many Republican-run areas are even more violent by the numbers. Conversely, when Democrats blame national trends or guns alone, they sometimes gloss over the fact that local policy missteps (like tolerating open-air drug markets or underfunding police) did exacerbate problems in certain cities. From a governance perspective, the past decade offers lessons in what not to do and what might work. For instance, abruptly reducing police presence (whether via budget cuts or loss of officers) seems correlated with localized crime spikes — as seen in Minneapolis or Oakland. Investing in policing and focused deterrence can help — e.g., after Washington, D.C.’s murder spike, the city increased officer hiring and targeted violent crews, contributing to the recent homicide decline. At the same time, purely punitive approaches without community investment have limits: cities like Tulsa that incarcerated many offenders still faced high recidivism and continued violence, because underlying issues (addiction, gangs) weren’t fully addressed. Progressive reforms like violence interrupter programs and expanded social services can pay dividends (Baltimore’s 2023 drop in crime coincided with initiatives funding community anti-violence groups), but those take time and must be paired with accountability for serious crimes. Perhaps the clearest governance impact has been seen in public safety staffing and resources. Democratic mayors in cities like New York and Chicago who embraced strategies to put more cops on the beat (NYC’s Eric Adams, for example) have seen crime stabilization, whereas cities that struggled to retain officers (Seattle, D.C. until recently) saw bigger trouble. Republican mayors generally prioritized police funding — to their credit, that likely helped some cities avoid worse spikes. Yet, policing alone is no panacea if prosecution falters or if trust with communities breaks down. Both blue and red cities learned that lesson painfully when clearance rates for shootings fell and residents took note. Ultimately, governance matters in that effective leadership —of any party— uses data and pragmatism to respond to crime trends. In recent years we have seen mayors from both parties pivot when needed: San Francisco’s Democratic mayor called back for more aggressive policing amid rampant drug crime, and Jacksonville’s Republican sheriff launched outreach programs in violence-plagued neighbourhoods recognizing that arrest-and-incarcerate wasn’t sufficient. The ❝best practices❞ in public safety are increasingly non-partisan: invest in policing and prevention, leverage technology (like gunshot detection and surveillance cameras) carefully, focus on the small percentage of offenders driving crime, and coordinate with county/state agencies on issues like mental health and gun trafficking. Cities that followed these tenets —whether run by Democrats or Republicans— tend to be seeing improvements now in 2023–2025. A Sceptical, Forward-Looking View Peering through a sceptical lens, one concludes that the politicization of urban crime has produced more heat than light. Yes, crime did rise in many Democrat-led cities over the past decade —sometimes dramatically so— but correlation is not causation. Blaming crime on a mayor’s party is an oversimplification that ignores deeper causes and even basic facts (like the severe crime problems in many GOP-run areas). Conversely, dismissing
