A chilling #russelreads with WITHERED HILL by David Barnett -- a British folk-horror in which a woman finds herself trapped in a mysterious village... but what must she sacrifice to leave? And who or what is Owd Hob? Brilliantly chilling, with more than a few unexpected twists, a definite recommend.

Dig it: #russelreads James Ellroy's, THE ENCHANTERS; a sick slide into the sin of the 60s with PI/Enforcer Freddie, hustling Hollywood as he looks into the suicide of Marylin Monroe. Sure Ellroy's take on history is far-fetched and mucho-melodramatic, but damn does it hook you and refuse to let go.

Had to #russelreads in fits & starts due to edits, but @lauralippman.bsky.social's LADY IN THE LAKE is a brilliant read -- a snapshot of a place and time that feels utterly real, and a crime novel that is about the ripple effect of crime more than the mystery (altho it's a damn fine mystery) (1/4)

Latest #russelreads PSYCHO: SANITARIUM by Chet Williamson, the first (?) authorised sequel to Bloch's classic chiller. In an asylum, Bates is manipulated by a sinister supporting cast including... his own brother?

Far better than I expected, this is a chilling companion to a classic novel. #booksky

Christmas eve #russelreads was WILLIAM by Mason Coile -- a short, sharp shock of a book in which an agoraphobic inventor creates an artificial intelligence named William... but what happens when William decides to test the limits of his free will? This punchy techno horror keeps those pages turning.

Latest #russelreads was NEAR THE BONE by Christina Henry, a dark fairytale horror, where a young woman realises her life may not be what she believes. But can she escape her abusive husband? & will she be able to face whatever the monster is that has settled near their home? Chilling & brilliant.

Spooky #russelreads with THE BURNING HOUSE by Neil Spring -- a creepy psychological thriller with aspects of the supernatural set around the very real Boleksine House. Altho some of the setup feels familiar, it doesn't pan out the way you expect, which makes for a tense and morally ambiguous climax.
