Saka says there isn't enough "geographic equity" when it comes to where RVs are in the city. His district has the most industrial areas, which are the only places RVs are currently allowed to park overnight, so it also has the most RVs.

This is how I reduced tents, encampments, and RVs in my district by 70%.

I've covered this plan to license RVs, require people to accept services and move into shelter, and tow any noncompliant RVs or those owned by people not counted in the one-time census, extensively. Here's an overview of the most recent vote: publicola.com/2026/10/21/c...

It WORKS, folks! Goodbye tents and RVs, hello cozy little cabin in a safe, secured, lighted community!
How do we solve the homelessness crisis in Seattle? We need to rapidly create more shelter and housing.

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson is vetoing the RV ordinance passed by council that would institute an RV permitting program. She's signed the other four related ordinances, and she will be announcing details about an executive order "to address RVs" tomorrow.
November 3, 2026 at 12:27 AM
Mayor Wilson did, in fact, veto the bill that would ban RVs over time, citing risks including the likelihood that the elaborate licensing system and one-time count of RV residents will increase administrative burdens and increase unsheltered homelessness. wilson.seattle.gov/wp-content/u...
I still think she should veto to force another vote and public debate, but it's hard to imagine who would change their vote on this bill, sponsored by Dan Strauss. "Yes" votes were Saka, Hollingsworth, Rivera, Juarez, Strauss, and Kettle.
November 3, 2026 at 12:31 AM
There's case law that defines RVs as residences (as opposed to towable vehicles) in some circumstances, and a lawsuit over Strauss' proposal seemed inevitable.

The facility had already lost its entire RVS-PK-50,000 tank farm and around 40% of its RVS-20,000 tank farm in previous strikes.

This will hurt Russia's ability to export Urals blend crude and take advantage of possibly rising oil prices in the event of renewed US bombardments of Iran.

Important context for all this: The city is about to open anew shelter, the Glassyard Commons, with 20 tiny houses and space for 72 RVs. Another RV safe lot is coming next year. That's not enough, but it's way more than what's available now.

Mark your calendars and testify!!! We love our neighbors in RVs and they deserve all the flowers unlike the murderous city council
I've been reminded there is a budget public hearing on Thursday (virtual at 1pm, in-person at 5pm). There is some budget overlap on the RV proposal so it wouldn't be entirely off-topic to speak about the RV permitting program and the veto.

You can read more about the RV permitting program below.

This is the right move by @mayor.seattle.gov to veto a performative, unworkable piece of legislation that won’t actually get people out of RVs and into stable housing.

I’m sure some on the Council will scream, but Mayor Wilson is again proving she’s the sensible and reasonable one here.

New thread on Mayor Katie Wilson's veto of Dan Strauss' legislation to create a permitting system for people who live in their RVs (which would require RV owners to accept services and shelter) and eventually ban them citywide. Both Strauss and Wilson agreed she initially said she wouldn't veto.
November 3, 2026 at 3:39 AM
Wilson is creating a task force to come up with new legislation by March 31 to "smooth the path for homeless RV residents to access safe lots, shelter, and services" and "focus on identifying the barriers to addressing the most problematic RVs on our city streets and overcoming them."

The "by-name list" of people living in RVs citywide was also part of Strauss' plan; however, his proposal used this as a limitation, slamming the door for services and shelter after a one-time count.
