Wonderclout
(n.)
- Something showy in appearance but that’s utterly worthless.

“The druxy oligarch, a meretricious wonderclout, doddered his way to the sacellum for a garishly Barnumized token balop featuring an awkwardly perfunctory rictus and the cack-handed wielding of a sacrosanct enchiridion.”

Vamos a disfrutarlo 🧵👇

#MosaicMonday offers us a huge #geometric #mosaic #floor in #blackandwhite as part of the guest quarters or #Hospitalia. This was not a dining hall - that's next door - but a shrine or #sacellum for his middle-level guests to pay their devoirs to the divine. #AncientBluesky 🏺
MOSAIC PAVEMENT, SACELLUM OF THE HOSPITALIA, 118-124 CE. HADRIAN'S VILLA At the far end of the Hospitalia or guest quarters of Villa Adriana is this large room, with arched niches at the back which are part of the Republican-era nucleus of the Villa. In front of them is a statue base, and this room should be considered a sacellum or worship space, though we don't know to whom it was dedicated (perhaps Roma or the deified Augustus). Most striking is the black and white mosaic pavement, with a series of black circles on a white background. The circles overlap and the space of the overlapping part are black lozenges, like six links of a chain. The border we see most clearly at the front is a sequence of floral circles in black on a white background, with a reed-like series of black lines between the circles. The sacred space occupies the central axis and forms its decorative conclusion.

"- For only within the sacellum of Anteros could my gaze confess my heart's desire to you."

#OC;Antares | #elezenenjoyers
image depicts 3 images of Antares, an elf, holding up a finger in front of his lips. Each frame shows the motion of him raising his head to gaze at the viewer. He stands before a row of roses and red stained glass mosaic. In greek mythology Anteros was the god of requited love, and to the romans he could be referred to as The Third Cupid. A sacellum was in Ancient Rome considered to be a shrine, and sometimes a sacred enclosure without a roof, perhaps even a temple square space. I used the Greek name for Anteros to keep the sentence short and sweet, and Sacellum appear to have conflicting meanings.

For #MosaicMonday, the Hospitalia sacellum mosaic floor with encircled hexagons (Hadrian’s Villa). Rather than house and feed nobles, as the name of the buildings may imply, the Hospitalia was a “secondary building”, most likely used by Hadrian’s Praetorian guard

Marvellous, marvellous! Self-immolation is a wonderful thing, isn't it? But now that we've had our fun, off to the Sacellum with you.

Thought to be an underground collegial sacellum for the imperial cult.

As we come to the anniversary of the Vesuvian eruption that destroyed Pompeii, I thought I would share this painting of the God Bes from the Sacellum of the city’s Isis Temple (Today in the Naples museum).

Never has he looked so plaintive. A poignant reminder.
