The Town of Sahuarita used to be strongly opposed to open pit copper mining in the Santa Rita Mountains. But that was before the town’s current leadership assumed power in 2016.

Pima County has requested the Arizona Department of Water Resources to not renew Toronto-based Hudbay Minerals' groundwater withdrawal permit for its proposed Copper World mine when it expires in January 2028.

Even though the Sahuarita Town Council took no action on whether to send a recommendation to the ACC about the Santa Rita Connection project, SSSR still encourages the public to file a comment with the ACC regarding this issue.
