More Salicaceae for your delectation. Size differences in Salix. #Salicaceae #willow
(But yeah, Euphorbias seem *particularly* gifted at it ;) )

Another one that throws people off is size changes. I like pointing out that these are in the same genus ;) (An exceptional Salix babylonica (weeping willow) vs. S. herbacea (dwarf willow) - the latter is common on my land)

This week’s topic: Salicaceae. The boundaries of #Salicaceae have changed in recent decades. It is now recognized as a cosmopolitan family of woody, mostly dioecious plants. Salix arctica is a rhizomatous groundcover & one of the most northerly vascular plants. 📷 David Stanley CCBY2 #botany 🌾🧪🌱

Pussy willows (Salicaceae: Salix discolor) are dioecious, having separate male and female plants. Both sexes produce flowers in elongated, slender clusters known as catkins. Fertilized female catkins produce clusters of slender green fruit. Pinckney State Recreation Area, Michigan, 05 May 2013.

Salicaceae are famous for salicin, first isolated from Salix alba, which our bodies convert to salycilic acid, a painkiller. Other Salicaceae are toxic: Some Salix & Banara spp. have cyanogenic glycosides (viz. prunasin). 📷: Salix exigua (Matt Lavin CCBYSA2), a cyanogenic species. #botany 🌾🧪🌱

Happy Sunday all. I know many of you, two and four legged, had a rough time last night. I hope things are better today. Here is a California thrasher (Toxostoma redivivum) hiding in a Fremont's cottonwood (Populus fremontii).

Unlike the temperate members of the family, many tropical species have showy flowers. Casearia dodecandra is a tropical Salicaceae from the Antilles. It’s in subfamily Samydoideae and lacks salicoid teeth. #Salicaceae #botany 🌾🧪🌱

The larvae of striped willow leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Disonycha alternata) feed on willow trees like this sandbar willow (Salicaceae: Salix exigua). As with most insects, the larvae look nothing like the adults. Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado, 03 Aug 2013.

Most deciduous trees undergo leaf senescence and abcission in autumn as a result of cooler temperatures and declining daylight. Some trees will also drop their leaves as a result of drought stress, like this eastern cottonwood (Salicaceae: Populus deltoides). Blissfield Michigan, 12 Aug 2025.
