Today we celebrate Emancipation Day, and I'm making stewed saltfish, also called codfish.

Saltfish became a staple during slavery and remained popular after emancipation because it was affordable.

Today it's so expensive that many of us save it for special occasions.

Tonight's dinner 🍽️🍜: Green fig and saltfish from Saint Lucia. In this case 'fig' means 'banana'. Served with avocado. I love the spicy Caribbean flavours of the saltfish and the cooked green bananas are the only bananas I've ever enjoyed. Recipe from: thatgirlcookshealthy.com/green-fig-an...

My allotment neighbour who watered my plot all summer is from Jamaica, so I brought him some of my pal's Newfoundland salt cod to thank him. He's now offered me callaloo that he's been growing so I can also try making saltfish & callaloo. <3

Amid all the bleakness, I love my allotment community.
