The Origin of the Banam: A Santali Tale of Betrayal and Song
Listen to an immersive, AI-voiced retelling of a classic Santali folk tale that explores the haunting origins of the traditional Dodro Banam instrument. Set deep within ancient sal forests, the story follows seven hunter brothers and their devoted sister, Sari, who tended to their hearth. When an accidental slip of iron draws Sari's blood into their evening meal, the eldest brother's monstrous greed is awakened, leading to an unthinkable betrayal.  Only the youngest brother resists the tragic feast, secretly burying Sari's remains by an ancient anthill. From her quiet grave sprouts a solitary, whispering tree, later discovered by a wandering craftsman. As the craftsman carves the timber into the form of a woman, the very first Dodro Banam is created. This captivating audio journey reveals how the spirit of a lost sister returned in a timeless song to confront her brothers and bring peace to the youngest. Tune in to experience a dark, beautiful legend of indigenous Indian culture brought to life through advanced AI voice generation.

This is so cool??

Ol Chiki is a script used for Santali -- with around 8 million speakers, the biggest Austroasiatic language in India.
I designed one of the earliest Unicode typefaces for Ol Chiki! eyeondesign.aiga.org/guru-gomke-i... The project was

Some people who invented writing systems for languages that didn't have them:

Sequoyah (Cherokee)
Ragunath Murmur (Santali)
Pu Buanga (Mizo)
James Evans (Cree, Ojibwe, Inuktitut)

This is, like, such a cool thing to have done in one's life

Looking up (for reasons) a gay porn actor from decades ago, and the Wiki article as well as being in English is in Spanish, what I think is Egyptian Arabic... and Santali

Santali?!?! A lesser-known polysynthetic Austroasiatic (which is almost a contradiction in terms!) language of India

Kudos

For example, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Assamese, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, and Sindhi, and by extension probably some other languages such as Santali, all have a word for 'lawyer' that comes from the Arabic word وكيل

Santali was added in 2003. It's overshadowed because it's not the majority language of any state, while its distributed between Jharkhand, Odisha, Bengal and Odisha.

(It's kinda like Kurdi in a way I guess)

"In my village, I have seen many people who struggle to write their names in Odia…yet can write in Ol Chiki effortlessly, with beautiful handwriting…Ol Chiki aligns naturally with Santali pronunciation, making it intuitive…That actually motivated me to spread the script and language digitally."

The Santhali language! The official script (Ol Chiki) was created by Raghunath Murmu in the 1940s.

Incidentally this is the first language of the current President of India, Draupadi Murmu.
