He moved from Belgium to Paris in 1842 & began redesigning bugles to make fingering easier.

He created the modern design of the bass clarinet & was famous for both performances & innovative new wind & reed instruments.

The saxhorn is still used in marching bands, while the saxtuba & saxotromba...

By 18, this man had survived falling down a 3 floor staircase, swallowing needles and acid he'd mistaken for milk, suffocating varnish fumes, serious burns, and a large brick being dropped on his head. Neighbours called him 'the ghost child'.

Antoine-Joseph "Adolphe" Sax was a Belgian inventor and musician who invented the saxophone in the early 1840s. He also invented the saxotromba, saxhorn and saxtuba, and redesigned the bass clarinet in a fashion still used to the present day. Sax faced many brushes with death. At the age of two he fell from a height of three floors, hit his head on a stone and was believed dead. At age three, he drank a bowl full of boric acid, mistaking it for milk, 61 and later swallowed a pin. At age eight, he received serious burns from a gunpowder explosion and also fell onto a hot frying pan, burning his side. At age eleven, he contracted measles and was in a coma for nine days. At age fourteen, he broke his arm in a carriage door. Sax sometimes slept in a room where varnished furniture was drying yet was not poisoned or asphyxiated. He almost died when he was struck on the head by a cobblestone and fell into a river. At age 23, he was severely poisoned after drinking tainted wine. His mother once said that "he's a child condemned to misfortune; he won't live" His neighbours called him "little Sax, the ghost". During the Crimean War (1853-1856), after Adolphe Sax had patented the saxophone, he made two more inventions. First, he designed the "Saxotonnerre", a massive, locomotive-powered organ which was supposed to be so loud as to be heard across all of Paris at once.(16] He then designed the "Saxocannon", a giant cannon whose half-ton round shots would be powerful enough to completely destroy an "average-sized city". Neither of the inventions were built.

If you want more Sax (ahem, eponyms), he had quite an output. He was prodigious—with all the bravado to go with it. Saxhorns, Saxtrombas, Saxtuba...the man was so skilled and obscenely cocky that he had *multiple hits* placed on his life!

The universe tried to kill Adolphe Sax at least 7 times in an effort to prevent him from inventing the saxophone.
