#sb16
Wrapping up the Compaq. Really interesting machine. Cyrix Media GX was ahead of its time in many ways. 486-derived with built in graphics and SB16. SoC if you will. And this Compaq is now in lovely condition. 😍

It even has an SB16 Vibra card in it, which is pretty neato! It has so much potential.

Do you have an SB16 that lets you disable its MPU-401 MIDI port?

the SB16 has an MPU-401 built in, its possible they're smashing into each other.

I had an idea of what was going wrong and I turned out to be correct. I have two sound cards and Windows is using the ISA one for MIDI and the PCI one for Sound FX

My solution is to just use both cards, with the midi on the SB16 and the line-in to the SB Live

It's not an IRQ conflict i just realized. Literally everything is setup 100% properly and all the cables are connected as they should be and no conflicts.

But Windows just won't run it, i suspect that it might be trying to run the midi from the other sound card I have in here which is a SB16.

I'm getting the drivers now.

I started with the DOS version, as is tradition, but a Roland MIDI device would be insanely decadent for a normal child in 1993. I either had an SB Pro or an SB16 at the time. Can't remember when we upgraded.

I finally have it: a Yamaha XG / FM chip on PCI with S/PDIF that wasn't a bazillion dollars. If we can enable digital out in DOS this might be the best Adlib/SB16 sound you can possibly get

I saw that post earlier and lost my fucking mind lol. Unfortunately the ASUS board I fried had them labeled correctly and it was Indeed my fault.

Although Sound Blaster 16 cards do this too and they have 44 caps. I dread the day need to recap one of my seven SB16 cards.
