SBL should be interesting this year
Media outlets: I hope you’ve got some solid religion reporters and scholars lined up, because a major story here—building on Warnock—is the growing power of progressive mainline Christianity in the face of a militant Christian supremacism.

Some very good sessions about ancient slavery at SBL this year!
Interested in early Christians conceptualizing God as their enslaver? Or how religious studies preps us for academic advising? Or how we can talk across sub-disciplines about slavery?

Come join our Saturday and Sunday sessions at SBL/AAR!

speaking of SBL, i've not received the multiple customary "DO NOT FORGET YOUR FUCKING BADGE!" emails.

makes me anxious that perhaps i didn't register for the conference after all.

This doesn’t include a wonderful pre-SBL meeting for Queering the Scriptures, where I’ll get to talk about the historical-ethical problems re: slavery, queerness, and sexual violence in NT texts. How do we deal with Jesus and the apostles normalizing sexual violence against enslaved persons?

This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate whether infections caused by metallo-β-lactamase (MBL)- vs. serine β-lactamase (SBL)-producing Enterobacterales are associated with differences in mortality among hospitalized adults:

You might think that citing a grammar according to SBL style would be straightforward. It is. But there are several special cases to account for. https://www.jdavidstark.com/citing-grammars-with-the-sbl-handbook-and-zotero/ @sblpress @zotero

Going to SBL in Denver? On Monday afternoon, I will argue that m. Shabbat 1 (the first chapter in tractate Shabbat from the Mishnah) formulates Sabbath halakha by thinking with enslaved labor while simultaneously obscuring these workers. A few test cases from the chapter will be presented.

If they actually want kids to study the bible they should use the SBL Study Bible recommended by @montemader.bsky.social as the official text. They won't, of course. They'll make their own study guide of passages they want to talk about.

Well, I'd say you missed about 90% of my thinking, my arg here, and my research project in general. My CUP book is where I lay out my methodology in detail. These buckets do a lot of work for you, but they simply don't fit me. Maybe a beer at SBL will allow more time to clarify.
November 2, 2026 at 4:26 PM
That's probably true—I'm not an expert in your work. But I don't think I missed your argument in the CT piece. It's quite clear IMO, insofar as there is an argument at all. It seems to me riddled with fallacies and non sequiturs. But I'd be happy to grab a beer at SBL and hash that out.

I remember, back in my going to AAR/SBL days, the idolisation of Brother West. The man is and has been a crank, in matters of US politics, for a long time and his instincts are to be a wrecker in ways easily manipulated by the right.

So much that is bad has happened to UK HE since I last went to the SBL meeting (2015) that I’d be fascinated to be at this session. In the UK one of the biggest changes has been the collapse of Humanities subjects like History. It is not much of a plus, but Bibs no longer sits alone as a target.
