The oldest surviving building in Toronto is a tiny log cabin built in 1794.
When the cabin was built, York (now Toronto) was only one-year-old.
It has seen the city grow around it and it is a glimpse into the distant past.
This is the story of the Scadding Cabin!

The Scadding Cabin, located at the Ex, is the oldest home in Toronto. It dates to 1794 when John Scadding built it. It was moved to its present site on Aug. 22, 1879, the same year the CNE began.

When the cabin was built in 1794, it sat on the property of John Scadding. Scadding was the clerk for Lt. Governor James Simcoe. This property was located on the east side of the Don River, south of Queen Street East. Scadding lived in the cabin until 1796.

Built in 1794, the cabin was moved to the exhibition grounds in 1879 by @yorkpioneers.bsky.social. It is the oldest surviving building in Toronto.

Originally constructed on the east bank of the Don River in 1794 for John Scadding, the cabin is now the oldest surviving dwelling in Toronto.

The York Pioneer and Historical Society have lovingly maintained Scadding Cabin as a museum over the years.

White-throated Sparrows
I was pretty excited to see a single Song Sparrow at Scadding Cabin. Then after I knelt down and settled in I realized there was at least a dozen.
Then I started to see the little white bibs of the White-throated Sparrows everywhere.

Scadding returned to York in 1818 and sold the cabin to William Smith. He used the cabin as an outbuilding. It remained in the Smith family until 1879 when the York Pioneers took over ownership. Henry Scadding, son of John, was a founding member of the historical society.
