#AwesomeCharacters The fun thing about the Scaleshifter series being character-driven is that we as readers get to see my two main characters’ thought processes and know that BOTH of them overthink everything. But from the outside, Ziya seems very decisive and even Caleb looks less squirrely 😂

This year, I’m gonna finish the rough draft of the first Golden Dusk book and work on formatting the next Scaleshifter. It takes about 30 minutes to write 1k words, so every half hour of formatting, I count as 1k words. It’s an odd system but it works for me!

Counting formatting time as words you could have written is a good system. What do you format in? My formatting app goes into public beta mid-November, so if the next Scaleshifter wants a test run, I’d love to have you.

I like to write all sorts if villains in my stuff. The villain depends on the story. Death Flirts Back had an uncomplicated, horrible man as its antagonist. Scaleshifter as a series had several antagonists, all of whom believed they were right or justified. Depends on what my heroes need!

Eldara let him take her hand again, following him in a winding path that only he knew. They skirted around gardens, ducked underneath hanging clothes, and finally reached a small home close to the edge of the city, where the demarcation between the dragons’ territory and the humans’ sat. There, looking toward the trees, was Cuno’s home. She’d spent winter days there playing games and listening to his parents and hers tell stories, though she hadn’t spent as much time there lately as she had when she was young. Once Cuno was old enough to help his father hunt, her favorite person hadn’t always been there to greet her, after all.

Kaal smiled as he flew closer to Tirikaa and Eldara. “Don’t listen to her,” he said. “I never do,” Tirikaa said before he could say anything else. “Kaal, your children are just like Ziya,” Lioia said. “And you love that about them, so why complain?” Liis asked. Like Lioia, she was among the younger members of the dragon council and was not above teasing. As a blue dragon, she loved to be in the sky, and she could be nearly as flashy about flying as Tirikaa was. But while Tirikaa put on a performance, Liis clearly loved flying like that for the love of flight itself; she laughed as she rushed for a cloud and threw herself into it. “Race you to the next cloud?” Tirikaa called up to Liis, and Eldara held on tighter, knowing this would probably be how most of the journey to Ytona went.

Eldara loves to learn magic from her parents' old friend <3 #wipsnips #scaleshifter
This past summer, she’d studied under Erik, the leader of the mountaineers. Each year, she watched age take more of his physical strength, until the staff he used to cast magic became as much a walking stick as a channel for his power. But even on days where he could do nothing but sit in his home with her and talk, she stole every moment she could, clinging to the lessons and to her own staff—a beautiful, polished oak staff enchanted to withstand dragonfire so that she didn’t have to worry about its safety when she lived in the dragon council’s mountain. At the top of the staff, a pearl the size of a child’s hand pulsed with power, holding all that she had poured into it for use later.

“I’m quite sure that, as soon as he sees how much you love to fly, he’ll hardly put you down and will want to carry you everywhere,” Ziya teased lightly, though she had opened her eyes again, watching Eldara carefully. “Yeah, maybe,” Eldara agreed, watching Yozraa tumble around until he found a small lizard and became fully engrossed in watching it move along a rock. Every time he got too close to it, it scampered off, but his keen dragon senses allowed him to find it again in no time at all. That poor lizard.

“What’s going on?” Eldara asked, trying to pull away from him to swim under her own power, but he kept her close to him, his staff held out defensively. The hunt had ended, but with so many humans in the water and so much blood clouding their vision, they weren’t safe yet. She could already see several mountaineers rushing to a dragon to hang onto her neck, using her to get out of the water. “Ziya isn’t here to calm him down,” Erik said out of the corner of his mouth. Eldara felt her skin go cold—even colder than the water had already made her—as she realized why he had pointed himself toward Kaal. The many creatures in the ocean that might want to join a feeding frenzy paled in comparison to the threat her father might pose if he turned against them. She had never had reason to fear her father before. Of her parents, he had always been the gentler one, to a fault. She’d grown up hating that he didn’t often say “no” to people, hating how long it took to leave any particular place because he had to listen to and chat with everyone there. Her mother was the fierce warrior, the one in legends, the shield that protected her father.

Eldara had a weird childhood. The entire dragon council watched her grow up and tried to help her feel like she had a place there, despite being human. #scaleshifter #wipsnips
As for Eldara, she lived in a pocket of a cave at the top of her family’s cavern. When she was younger, she had been part of the larger cave, but she hadn’t liked how big and dark it was. Hillousiar, one of the green dragons on the council, had suggested a small opening to the outside of the cave, which would allow her to get fresh air and light. “Humans are fragile,” he’d said at the time, but she thought he meant it affectionately. After all, he’d gone to all the effort of helping her dig out a spot for herself.

The one thing she could do was get her friend to safety, so she pushed aside the tight feeling in her chest to instead press her way toward the edges of the outer circle. Tirikaa wasn’t hard to find; even though he would probably have some official role to play in the coronation later that day, he didn’t have anything going on yet, which meant he was right in the middle of a group of kids, letting them climb all over him and slide down his wings. “Tiri, why are you letting yourself turn into a children’s game?” Eldara called out, trying to sound like she was teasing him as she would always do, trying to pretend at normalcy for the sake of the children all around her brother.
