#schefflenz
And now I’m not in Schefflenz any more.
In Frankfurt for Cider World. On the jury for the awards tomorrow, so an earlier night tonight. But already had nice networking.

The local beaver dam is nicely established now. There was another one upstream, but someone removed it. I hope officially.

Guests have gone. Was a lovely day. We’re cleaning up, so one more Aperol Spritz, but with our cider instead of Sekt.

Normally I’d be at the @rosscider.bsky.social festival this weekend. For various reasons I couldn’t go, which makes me a little sad to miss out. So bringing a bit of Ross atmosphere to Schefflenz, delving into my precious top shelf. The only Foxwhelp I’ve really liked 😁

The level of water in the Kertel has been rising, as has the Schefflenz into which it flows. More swimming space in the heart of the village. The beavers have been upgrading their dam! There’s another smaller one downstream.

Good morning.
Is that the first open pear blossom here in Schefflenz? We will investigate 😜
April 6, 2026 at 7:18 AM
Love it. I noticed the water level in our stream was rising the past few days, so had a look on the Schefflenz this morning. As expected, the beavers have reconstructed their destroyed dam 😁
Makes for a better swim too, says Anu.

The 1250 year anniversary of Schefflenz has begun. Gonna be a lot of talking now. And it’s hot 🥵
July 19, 2024 at 5:24 PM
False alarm.
On cycling past yesterday evening, I mistook the glossy leaves and growth habit of alder for a perry pear tree 😆
What’s Anja got to have a swim in the Schefflenz.

So, walked, breakfasted (for a change) and slathered in SPF 30. This pile of mulch needs to cross the bridge over the Schefflenz to the nursery. Mulch just in time before the brutal hot phase begins. But first I need to mow. Everything growing like there’s no tomorrow.

Tired of seeing this nursery yet? 😜
Just a bit of light work this evening, setting the remaining trees I had to heel in last night, and brought 7 Brown Snouts over from the overflow nursery. Power going back on the fence today. See that stream, the beavers are gnawing trees right there.

Ooooh! Our ciders and perries went on sale in Switzerland today. Really happy with their descriptions! But given the history of perry in Switzerland, and what I’ve written about it, it feels a bit surreal.

Met a man recently from Bamberg who lives in Schefflenz. He knew my wife & seemed to know me. No idea. Anyway, said he had Rauchbier, doesn’t like it, he’d bring it over. He brought a selection of all sorts over yesterday, this too. I’d forgotten the joy of small German breweries.
August 10, 2024 at 9:01 PM
I had a feeling I knew why, as some neighbours that lived further upstream on the Schefflenz were no longer there. Maybe they had moved downstream? And indeed, that the case. There’s a new beaver dam on the Schefflenz, below the confluence with the Kertel. They have a nice supply of trees here!

We had another beer from my backpack, then Frank produced two glasses & an organic dark beer. He’s a good friend. An organic farmer that knows his stuff, I trust him implicitly, & we used to brew together. We chatted about stuff till after the sun set, with a fantastic view over the villages below.

Something with his name or Schefflenz or both in it would be really cool.

We’re not in Schefflenz anymore 😁
March 9, 2025 at 2:42 PM
Heading down the cycle path I was on yesterday to see if I can confirm some pear tree sightings. Very rarely follow this route to Unterschefflenz , kind of boring.

A couple months ago I noticed that the Kertel, the stream that runs past our house, and one of our nurseries, right where it flows into the Schefflenz, was really high. Steps down to the spring we use to water trees are covered, and it wasn’t dropping. And the Schefflenz really high! But why?
October 20, 2023 at 7:18 AM
Comparing the water level on Sunday in the Kertel and the Schefflenz to now, it was clear the council had removed the beaver dam. Seems bloody shortsighted in these dry conditions to let such a body of water just disappear 😕 They are allowed do this within the bounds of the village though.

It’s nice to be back in Schefflenz.
Though born and raised in a city, their appeal has grown less over the past 14 years living in the countryside.
