Chardin’s work was deeply appreciated by the French bourgeoisie, the new middle class, which placed a high value on early childhood education as a means to bettering their futures. Early education in France at this time was primarily handled by the mother, an older sibling or a relative; young girls as well as young boys were taught basic literacy in the home setting rather than in a school. This educational advance was a direct result of the Age of Enlightenment, which revolutionized the concept of childhood as a distinct and special stage of life. In “The Young Schoolmistress”, Chardin paints a young child (probably a boy, around age 3-4 years) and an older girl (probably in her early teens), maybe a relative (she is too young to be a governess), who is patiently giving a reading lesson. Both are absorbed in their tasks – to learn and to teach – in a composition that is softly hued and quietly private. She uses a metal pointer to pick out something in the open book; the child concentrates on his response. Both are dressed in typical bourgeoisie attire: not too fancy or showy but nicely made. Chardin painted a gentle genre scene that resonated with his clientele and appeals to us still today.

. I still love the story David Niven recounted about Bader giving a talk to an upmarket girls' school, and describing the German planes attacking him as "the fuckers". This prompted the pale-faced schoolmistress to interrupt with, "Ladies, the Fokker was a type of German aircraft," to which Bader replied: "That's as may be, Madam, but these fuckers were in Messerschmitts."
