3 of 4 Watson and Andy McCombie (from Inverness) were in front of him. The 1904 England game was won 2-1 with these three in the team. 109 Sunderland matches together for the trio explains the Roker success. The backbone - if not the entire team - was the #scotchprofessor.

2 of 4 A #scotchprofessor and an international and EFL winner, but I am tickled by his nickname ‘Daddy Long-Legs’. It possibly tells us more about his playing and running style than any serious text. That Champion team had one of my favourite Professors: Ned Doig (from Arbroath) in goal.

1 of 4 #scotsfoundedfootball Sometimes a game not involving Scotland tells us a great deal about Football history. In this case Hungary 7 England 1 in 1954. Scotland had nothing to snigger about. In the broad scheme of things the genius of the #scotchprofessor had emigrated to Central Europe.

4 of 4 So what? Listen, children. Is that the sound of Johnny Madden birling in his Prague grave? Or the ghost of Jimmy Hogan looking sorrowfully at every #scotchprofessor who taught him how to play the Hungarian way. Damn. I’ve smashed my sarcasmometer.

1 of 4 #scotsfoundedfootball Part 1 of 2 OTD 1886 Arsenal’s first fixture was played against Eastern Wanderers at Millwall. Arsenal won 6-0. David Danskin played and was captain. That is David Danskin from Fife. The #scotchprofessor was establishing another world-famous club.

4 of 4 So what? Sunderland is part of the Spiders’ web. Taught to play Association by a Scot, they exported it (along with Scottish engineers/shipyard workers to places like the Basque Country.) Wherever you turn, the hand of the #scotchprofessor is present.

1 of 4 #scotsfoundedfootball Tomorrow is the anniversary of the 1882 Game That Broke English Hearts. Born of a decade of Scottish supremacy. First Hampden. 10,000 inside. 15,000 on theProspect Hill. The Scottish fans saw another virtuoso performance 5-1 #scotchprofessor

1 of 5 #scotsfoundedfootball I have referred previously to Peter McWilliam at Spurs and his influence on the ‘Spurs Style’. It was basically the #scotchprofessor under a new name, which obscured the Scottish influence. This is really about renaming the Combination Game to smother Scottish history.

1 of 4 #scotsfoundedfootball Dugald ‘Duggie/Dougald’ Lochhead BTD Partick 1904. Manager Galatasaray (Turkey) 1950-52 and Heracles Almelo (Netherlands) 1953-56. Another #scotchprofessor who did not trouble the International Team, but who underscores the depth of football culture.

I can always take time to pay my respects to Joseph Taylor. The only 1872 Scotland player buried in Glasgow. #scotchprofessor

1 of 3 #scotsfoundedfootball James Hay Newcastle and Celtic share the honours for ‘The General’. 255 and 217 games respectively. All clubs’ fans lionise past players, but he seems to have been a real hero. Six consecutive titles with Celtic is the proof. #scotchprofessor

1 of 6 #scotsfoundedfootball Charles Alcock ’s 1906 book is a mass of contradictions. Charles confuses himself again and again. He has to discuss the Combination Game, but how can he explain it, whilst simultaneously denying the #scotchprofessor and promoting England? Here’s how.

1 of 4 #scotsfoundedfootball Aston Villa are one of my fave teams. I regard them as Scottish. Not geographically, but culturally. They are one of my proofs that the #scotchprofessor is a concept which is separate from ethnicity, religion, colour, or language. They are reborn in a Scottish style.

1 of 4 #scotsfoundedfootball 1864 Andrew Hannah born Renton. First captain of Liverpool. 1892 Scottish Cup winner 1888 Renton and unofficial World Champions v WBA. League winner 1891 Everton A #scotchprofessor par excellence in that his influence was spread far and wide.

1 of 4 #scotsfoundedfootball The #scotchprofessor spawned an industry. Workers were abused by their owners. The workers combined for protection and Scots were there. In February 1898 the Association Footballers’ Union was founded, to combat the EFL’s decision to cap wages at £4 per week.

4 of 4 So what? Amazing isn’t it? How do you miss Thomas Donohoe founding Bangu? Getting to Rio in 1894? Jock Hamilton ? The first professional trainer and a #scotchprofessor Archie McLean founding the Scottish Wanderers? Thomas Scott founding THREE football clubs? You know why.

1 of 5 This one of my favourite posts. It links Scotland to Argentina. #scotsfoundedfootball OTD 1905 Club Atletico Independiente of Avellaneda, Gtr. Buenos Aires were founded. This is the official date. They had been playing since 4 Aug 1904. The #scotchprofessor link? Their first club badge.

1 of 4 #scotsfoundedfootball OTD 1930 Bart McGhee scores the 1st ever World Cup goal by a Scotsman 3-0 win over Belgium - Estadio Gran Parque Central, Montevideo. I would have said #scotchprofessor but as both Argentina and Uruguay were also Scotch Professors I will not limit the term.

3 of 4 They played Derby County in the English Cup 17 Jan 1891. About 8,000 watched. Arsenal lost 2-0. Derby County tried to sign three players from Arsenal after the game. One of them was the #scotchprofessor Peter Connolly from Kirkcaldy. Why wouldn’t you? Amateurs have no contracts.

1 of 3 #scotsfoundedfootball Alexander (Sandy) Higgins played for Newcastle between 1905 and 1919. He made relatively few appearances in 14 seasons (150). I should append ‘Junior’ to his name. The 1st #scotchprofessor was his dad Alex who played between 1882 and 1894.

1 of 3 #scotsfoundedfootball Here’s my jokey Liverpool link: Jimmy Hogan - the Nelson-born Anglo-Irish coach (1882-1974). Hogan is the best example of a #scotchprofessor - The phrase describes a state of mind not a geographical place. Understand that and you’re sound.

4 of 5 ‘Austrians, Hungarians and Czechs moulded their game on the Scottish last - precise short passing and clever positioning. Wow: that’s at least four modern nations (Czechia, Slovakia) who were taught to play the #scotchprofessor way.
