The vibes at the Scruton Cafes* in Budapest must be at an all-time low.

*A chain of cafe/bars inspired by British conservative philosopher Roger Scruton. Est by the Hungarian govt-backed Batthyány Lajos Fnd to help the Orbanist right connect with the youth. They have not succeeded

Cartoon featuring Roger Scruton from the June 2019 issue of Viz. Scruton died about 7 months after it was published, but not as a result of it, as far as I know.

By the way, Rajan loved Roger Scruton and wrote for The Salisbury Review so he was hardly hiding his alignment before he arrived at the BBC.

If you can’t tell she’s an unintelligent bigot from everything she ever says and does, the inane Roger Scruton quote should help

"The right of asylum is an untouchable provision of English law" - Roger Scruton (England: an elegy, p8). Yes, we've moved to the right of Scruton.

Re: my last RT, I think we should all take a moment to reflect on how very bizarre it is that this chain of cafés came into being in Orban's Budapest.

Meanwhile I’ve sought refuge in the puppetmaster’s cafe (because I don’t want to give Scruton any money)

This link between Reform policy head James Orr and Victor Orban (& Russian oil money) via the Roger Scruton Legacy Foundation also reveals how linked all these right-wing groupings are to the idealised anti-enlightenment brand of English nationalism, which Scruton represented. This is why Farage 1/2

The right has always had a pronounced anti-intellectual streak.

In The Meaning of Conservatism Scruton applauded "unthinking people" who accept the burdens life imposes on them without complaint.

They want a society that uncritically defers to their "superiors"

man, now i'm reminded of badly Roger Scruton understood the 20th century left, and wrote an entire book about it
This probably colours his fairly atrocious readings of some Marxist figures treated of in Volume 3, such as the Frankfurt School and Althusser, whom he just straightforwardly misunderstands

Farage's pitch to the right is "Bloody immigrants, eh?" Badenoch's is "Have you read Roger Scruton on the evils of postmodernism?"

When Roger Scruton died, notable UK philosophers produced a torrent of sympathetic and positive obituaries--Scruton was gregarious, funny and extremely kind to them, personally, as it turns out; contrast this to his oeuvre regarding the bare humanity of anyone not like those notable UK philosophers
