The effortless part has always haunted me with many of the artists from the Golden Age. The scumbling Pyle does here gives that impression of half tone without crosshatch or stippling. Amazing!

The 'roses and castles' theme on the doors is very traditional for some reason, I've got them too (very knackered now). Always felt like doing a 'weeds and power stations' re paint

That wood grain effect is called scumbling, you use 2 tones of paint & a rubber pad drawn along it to make the effect.

Update: this one is extremely hard to photograph, but hopefully you can see some of the tiny fur detailing. Im experimenting with some sgraffito techniques and some scumbling
