Back when I worked at SEAAquarium, we talked about this with some of the Aquarists regarding the plural of octopus.
I think I recall them saying: if it’s a group of all the same species, it’s octopuses. If it’s a group consisting of different species, then it’s octopi.

The plural of goose is geese but the plural of mongoose is mongooses and the plural of mouse is mice and the plural of louse is lice but no one is ever quite in agreement if the plural of octopus is octopods, octopi or octopuses.
