Seaborg. Seaborg? Really. Seaborg.

They want a fume hood, so I’m gonna assume they were trained as scientists so they have at least HEARD of him?

WTF DO YOU THINK WAS IN THAT LAB YOU DOPES?!?

I think three of these were born in the USA. Most of the rest had just got here.

Chemist Glenn Theodore Seaborg was born on April 19, 1912. He discovered or co-discovered ten transuranium elements (Pu, Am, Cm, Bk, Cf, Es, Fm, Md, No, and Sg), and shared the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. 🧪 ⚛️

Eighty-five years ago today, chemists Glenn Seaborg, Joseph Kennedy, and Arthur Wahl (continuing work by physicist Edwin McMillan) first produced element 94 (plutonium) in the 60-inch cyclotron at UC Berkeley. Exactly 1,700 days later, “Fat Man”—fueled by 13.6 lbs. of Pu-239— destroyed Nagasaki.

It’s for figuring out the methods to actually weigh this tiny thing that Seaborg got his Nobel.

Tonight in 1940, in a lab at 307 Gilman Hall at UC Berkeley, chemists Glenn Seaborg, Joseph Kennedy, and Arthur Wahl (using physicist Edwin McMillan’s techniques) isolated and discovered element 94 (plutonium). Exactly 1,700 days later, “Fat Man”—fueled by 13.6 lbs. of Pu-239— destroyed Nagasaki.

Which is to say it’s always a treat as staff to get applause for talking about radiation and history things. Admittedly, Seaborg did the hard part for me.

I had to google "Seaborg" to understand this one and the more I skimmed his bio the more my eyebrows furrowed at the idea of someone trying to renovate a space he did lab work in.

Sometimes your posts make me very glad to be a desk academic, Phil.

It pleases me deeply that Seaborg had a shirt with the Periodic Table information for Seaborgium on it, and the words "I am in my element."
