I've been working on some creature concepts for #ProjectBaizens lately. Here's the sealice.

Finally we had two great talks on gene editing. One from the great Rob Stewart from @roslininstitute.bsky.social showing different response from editing the two trim25 copies of Atlantic salmon and another talk from Matt Washmuth from NOFIMA using CRISPR-based promoter screen for sealice resistance

We @envevidencecanada.bsky.social are seeking #GreyLiterature for an ongoing DFO evidence synthesis on the effects of #sealice from salmon farms on wild #PacificSalmon. Please get in touch if you have any literature or data related to the topic! Deadline is March 31, 2025 #netpens #aquaculture

As always the presentation by @salisburyfish.bsky.social was great! Using Single nuclei RNAseq data she identified genes that seems to explain why some salmonids (such as coho or pink) are resistant to sealice when others (Atlantic and chum) are susceptible

🇨🇦 Getting rid of #FishFarms brings back #WildSalmon stocks. #FishFarms kill wild species while raiding supplies of krill to produce fish farm food. #SeaLice (fish flea) populations sky rocket and kill young salmon while adult salmon food (krill) is scooped up, starving adult salmon.

Wild salmon lovers in the province are expressing cautious optimism as Fraser River sockeye returns significantly exceed expectations — something that’s being attributed, in part, to the removal of fish farms in the area. 🎣 @amandafollett.bsky.social reports.
The Fraser’s Impressive Sockeye Returns Prompt Fishery Openings | The Tyee
Advocates say it’s a fish farm closure victory. Fishers are calling to strike while the iron is hot.

@alex4salmon.bsky.social if you only had #facts. Stop making stuff up. Only thing true in this post might be "old fishing boats". The farms aren't "closed", and there's data regarding #sealice / #wildsalmon in the area you're ranting about that doesn't support your statements. #lies or #ignorant?

🇨🇦 #SeaLice, #Disease and #Infections are the main killers of #WildSalmon. Removing #FishFarms gets rid of these problems.
#FarmedFish are genetically ill and high infectious. Wasted food combined with sick fish leads to massive sea lice growth. These sea fleas kill the young salmon.

Love seeing salmon numbers back. But still to date there is no clear indication why the numbers so large. Could be farm removal, ocean conditions just right. Nobody has yet determined actual reason. Just glad to see such large numbers again.

But Gideon still doesn't understand intricate ecological systems which is why he is writing a baseless opinion piece and ignoring actual studies on #prv and #wildsalmon in the Pacific and over 350,000 wild salmon samples analyzed for #sealice infestation over the last 20 years. #activist
Early in Dr. Gideon Mordecai's career as a biologist, he thought his toughest challenge would be understanding intricate ecological systems. Instead, his attention has shifted to something much more disheartening—battling #DFO bureaucracy. @ubcoceans.bsky.social
