Horrifying how quickly this stuff normalised in some sectors
THREAD: As we head into the midterms, I've tried to take stock of Trump's reign, the damage to our country, and how we’ve already gotten used to a level of fascism, authoritarianism, and corruption that would be unthinkable and shocking to us just a decade ago.

Here's the whole series of essays:

There are a lot of left for dead "catchup" sectors and companies out there finally getting flows. Most interest rate and energy sensitive, fingers crossed might be trending back in a good direction.

First, the basics.

The US productivity uptick in AI-adopting sectors starts in 2020, not 2022. Even if you spot a new acceleration around 2022, that’s too early to be AI. Back then it was chatbots, not agents.

I truly wish folks across sectors would learn about the “protest paradigm” and the ways that we as citizens and people with influence can either choose to contribute to it or reject it

More importantly, if we break productivity down into its components — output & employees — US acceleration since 2022 is primarily a tech layoffs story.

Output stayed on trend, and unlike other sectors/countries where employment flatlined, in US tech it fell and has kept falling in a straight line.

So, to the extent that AI may *now* be playing a role in continued weak junior hiring or tech layoffs, it’s likely less about raw capabilities or adoption rates and more about how different sectors and countries respond to those same things.
November 2, 2026 at 2:24 PM
Also, AI use is now very widespread in these sectors in all high-income countries, so a simple “AI adoption -> productivity boost” story doesn’t fit the international pattern.

(NB I’m not saying US responding differently to same forces more broadly is implausible — more on this later)

Seems like something—namely a tough and escalating sanctions regime that erodes their warfighting ability and starves key sectors of capital and markets—is needed to change their calculus.
October 28, 2026 at 1:32 PM
This is a tale as old as time.

Whether you look at the Great Recession, pandemic, or the bundle of shocks and uncertainty starting 2022, we see the same pattern:

US labour market responds more flexibly to the same forces. More layoffs; weaker firms fail; reallocation into more productive sectors.
