#sednoid
Yes, there's a newly discovered world in town (that is, our solar system): the sednoid named by its discoverers 'Ammonite'. Maybe named for a certain novel? After all, there's already a crater on Europa named 'Uaithne'...
Welcome to our solar system, Ammonite!

YO NEW SEDNOID JUST DROPPED
Congrats to Ying-Tung Chen, @astrokiwi.bsky.social & co. on the discovery of 2023 KQ14, the 4th and smallest known sednoid! (diameter 130-260 km)
It has a perihelion of 65.9 AU and it isn't clustered like most of other extreme TNOs. 🔭 minorplanetcenter.net/mpec/K25/K25...

I’m moving to a distant sednoid with no atmosphere

Minor correction - 2023 KQ14 is a sednoid or a a trans-Neptunian object, not a dwarf planet.

What was the Sun's birth cluster like? I loved reading about this method which uses the Sednoid objects in the outer solar system to investigate this 🧪☄️🔭
☄️ Michelle's first paper constrains the birth cluster of the Sun. Using N-body simulations and the orbital properties of the Sednoids in the outer Solar system, they can improve constraints on the density of, and time the Sun spent in, the cluster by an order of magnitude! 🔭 arxiv.org/abs/2510.19910

So, no, which is valid. But I have 3 responses to that. First: there’s a reason that this work is only happening now even though the 3rd Sednoid was discovered in 2015: it took that long to get solid orbits. Second is falsifiability. Discover a 4th Sednoid and it’ll either work, or it won’t.

It is not a planet, but a sednoid, one of only four objects known to us with such characteristics.

Discovered by Japanese astronomers using the Subaru telescope in Hawaii.

Doug Chandler, Mid-Ohio & Laconia in '96 & '97 respectively; in both years he won the AMA's #1 plate.

Freelancing meant 25+ rolls, traveling back to Boston that night for E-6 (+1) processing, sorting & then Fed-Ex'ing slides to the editor who got me credentials.

Learning about Sednoids and 3D printing up a mech inspired raven, as one does.

These Sednoid things are COOL!

Correction: new SEDNOID dropped
It's paper day! We report the discovery of a new high-perihelion (q=66 au) world on a Sedna-like orbit, in the FOSSIL II survey with Subaru telescope of the outer Solar System

Discovery and dynamics of a Sedna-like object with a perihelion of 66 au
Nature Astronomy - The discovery of 2023 KQ14, a Sedna-like object with a perihelion of 66 au, fills a gap in the known population. Its orbit does not align with other Sedna-like objects,...

Thanks!
Please note that 'sednoid' is not a term in widespread usage, so it is not a good coinage for the WP article

Last month, I found the sednoid/high-perihelion TNO 2012 VP113 in Sloan Digital Sky Survey images from 2007—5 years before its discovery! Incorporating these new obs in VP113's orbit drops the uncertainty nicely (U=3.5→3.1). I've submitted these obs to the Minor Planet Center (now published). (2/3)

The griz magnitudes from DECam and SDSS (latter found by Sam Deen, pending submission to MPC) suggest 2017 OF201 is pretty red (apparently "almost as red as Sedna"), g-r=0.82, r-i = 0.41 (+/- 0.1 mag for both). groups.io/g/mpml/messa...

A new discovery delivers a blow - not a decisive blow, but a blow nevertheless - to the Planet Nine hypothesis.

Sednoid 'Ammonite' (a ETNO) - or rather it's orbit - doesn't fit the clustering pattern that Planet Nine was theorized to explain.

New Sednoid “Ammonite” discovery deepens Planet Nine mystery
Astronomers have found 2023 KQ14, nicknamed Ammonite, a rare sednoid with a unique orbit that challenges the Planet Nine hypothesis.

Astronomers reported that"Ammonite is an object located beyondNeptune and classified as a"Trans-Neptunian Object (TNO)."Stating that"Ammonite's elliptical orbit makes it special," scientists announced that "Ammonite is included in"Sednoid"group, which has only three other similar objects like"Sedna."
