Watch seismic waves from the M7.7 earthquake in Myanmar ripple across North America.

This animation, called a Ground Motion Visualization (GMV), shows how the ground moved as detected by seismometers across the continent.

An incredibly well-timed Landsat 9 pass captured the effects of yesterday’s catastrophic glacier collapse near the Nepal–Tibet border. The event was so massive that it was detected by seismometers around the world.

Less! Half a micron nominal. Modern seismometers are amazing.

It's not just earthquakes our seismometers pick up, they can also detect the weather!

On Thursday morning a large lightning storm hit Leicester, with the thunder being picked up on our seismometers, showing as peaks in the seismogram.

NEW: Hurricane Melissa was such a monstrous tempest that it was literally shaking the Earth as far away as Florida, where seismometers picked up its stormquakes.

Here’s how seismometers can also shine a light on hurricanes long gone.

As Hurricane Melissa makes landfall in Jamaica, we can see its approach over the past few days on seismometers. Strong winds generated by hurricanes create ocean waves and pressure fluctuations that cause stronger up and down movements in the water column, which seismometers record.

Also runs our handful of permanent ocean bottom seismometers off Cascadia....
The OOI is like a massive network of weather stations, but for the ocean. Sensors collect real-time data on temperature, currents, carbon, storms, habitats, and sea level. Scientists around the world use these data; no individual lab or nonprofit could build or maintain a system of this scale.

Because we don't have an extensive enough seismic network.

We must invest in seismometers spaced every 5 km across the entire continent.

We bury seismometers to keep them safe, at a stable temperature, and to contact hard rock to pick up the earth “breathing” at very low frequencies.

Wake up, babe, the new quietest spot on Earth just dropped 🤫🧊🌐

It's 2.5 km under the South Pole—and geologists have installed seismometers there that operate more quietly than the background rumblings of Earth itself. Read more about this cool project in @science.org : tinyurl.com/5n76jfht #science

GPS is how seismometers' clocks are kept fixed to the same time.

Absolutely essential to being able to do anything with any precision.
Some really friggen neat science facts about GPS, that lots of folks don't know about (and are touched on in this vid):

- You need #RadioAstronomy and quasars for GPS to work --> www.spaceaustralia.com/index.php/fe...

- the Sun messes with GPS signals www.spaceaustralia.com/news/your-sm...

I am reminded today of how many people I know that have seismometers lol
