Russian hosting provider Beget confirms a cyberattack that erased data across its VPS, S3 and Kubernetes cloud infrastructure, along with IP and CDN settings. Some backups survived. Meanwhile, another big Russian provider, Selectel, reports disruptions affecting cloud services and databases. #Russia
Major Russian hosting provider Beget suffered a severe outage overnight, with connectivity dropping to around 7% of normal at one point. Beget described it as a “major incident” affecting multiple infrastructure layers. Hundreds of thousands of hosted domains may be affected. #Russia

🔥 As a result of a cyberattack, the Russian provider Beget lost all data in the cloud infrastructure, as well as IP and CDN settings.

In addition, today it became known about problems with another large hosting provider in Russia called Selectel.

🚨🇷🇺 Russia’s digital infrastructure is under pressure.

Nov 2: Beget suffers a destructive cyberattack.
Nov 2–3: Selectel reports major network disruptions in Moscow.

Meanwhile, Putin orders private data centres to reserve 10% of capacity for state use.

What happened? 🧵

⚠️ ru-7a and ru-7b are separate physical cloud segments in Moscow, not necessarily mirrors.

Yet BOTH experienced network problems.

Why? A shared controller failure or cascading overload could affect both.

Selectel hasn’t disclosed a root cause. These are hypotheses, not findings.

💻 Physical strikes can destroy data-centre buildings and equipment.

A cyberattack on management systems can erase data or make healthy servers inaccessible.

Beget confirms destructive malware. Selectel confirms network failures.

Different mechanisms. Potentially widespread consequences.

🚨🇷🇺 Selectel, Moscow time:

Nov 2, 20:25 — Network trouble reported in ru-7a AND ru-7b.
Nov 3, 07:53 — Major incident recorded.
18:29 — Virtual network controllers stabilising.
21:51 — Major incident resolved.

Both segments affected. No confirmed cyberattack.

Selectel, St. Petersburg’s top tech host, updated its terms of service to disclaim liability if Russian air defense hits its servers.

Somebody in legal asked if state missiles were likely to hit their own data center and wrote the answer into the contract. 10/

Once data centres were on the table, I don't know why they would have gone for anything else. Should finished off the rest of Yandex, then VK, Selectel, K2, Sberbank & VTB in as rapid succession as possible to maximally hinder chances of recovery. They were taunted into oil strikes, while on a roll.

Seems you got that wish for a strike on Sberbank Saratov!

I haven't seen damage assessments, but it sounds like they're still online.

Hope their DR environments are hit next.

There's also VK Cloud, Selectel, and K2 to go.

Selectel Dubrovka (Dubrovka 1, 2, and 3) Southeast of St. Petersburg is next.........................

Ja też. Nadal nietknięte są duże centra RosTelekom i Selectel. Zwłaszcza RosTelekom może systemowo położyć banki.

And as you'd know then - societies consistently underestimate how much hidden IT keeps the wheels from fall off the modern world around them. Even in somewhere as backward as Russia. I hope Ukraine doubles down on the data centre campaign.

Yandex, VK Cloud, Selectel, K2, Sberbank VTB, msk.ix, etc.

Looks like 3 of 5 Yandex data centres were targetted, with the ‘Vladimir’ site being the biggest. Russia has other big data centre players in this market, too. Rostelecom (huge) and Selectel come to mind, but I’m sure there are others

Yes and the strikes to date have undoubtedly caused massive damage already (as documented below). I think there's still more to be had at Yandex though. Then at VK, Selectel, K2 Cloud, Sberbank, and VTB's DCs next.
