Seleucids vs Ptolemaic. Quite the game. We managed to pull out a win, I played Seleucids. My partner managed to get elephants on their flank and rolled them up

*the Seleucids have entered the chat*
What are you thinking of? Jews had detractors before Christianity, but I think what we know of now as antisemitism is rooted in Roman ideas

Why are these elites behaving like this is a Paradox game and not *gestures as whatever nonsense the Seleucids are up to* is kind of the question about Rome.

Trying (desperately) to finish this chapter on Hellenistic mobilization systems has left me more impressed with how much the Antigonids do with so little and *intensely* disappointed with how little the Ptolemies and Seleucids do with so much.

So this was a system with some clear vulnerabilities, but which enabled Carthage to field really large armies that were actually quite effective (unlike the Macedonians and the Seleucids, the Carthage sometimes defeats Roman armies!). 34/

the resistance of the cholesterol in your arteries to your bloodstream is a metaphor for the resistance of the maccabees to the seleucids
I love that Jews invented a holiday that’s about frying food. One of our finest.

The outnumbered Seleucids hold one flank on a steep wooded hill, but the odds look badly against them.

Likewise, the Roman victory against the Seleucids at Thermopylae (191) relied on a long-distance flanking maneuver by - wait for it - yet more military tribunes, Marcus Porcius Cato and Lucius Valerius Flaccus.

Roman soldiers were disciplined and certainly effective, but very much soldiers.

5th Syrian War campaign phase 4.
Battle of Senabris.
The Ptolemaic forces heavily outnumber the Seleucid Satrap forces. But have the Seleucids got a surprise up their sleeve?

Hanukkah is most often associated with the victory of the Hasmoneans over the Seleucids.

Yet starting in the medieval period, another figure, not mentioned in the 2 books of Maccabees or any earlier Jewish works, is associated with Hanukkah: Judith!

as far as I can tell, high-church reforms to Zoroastrianism under the late Seleucids had led to a breakdown in the religious order which led to widespread conversion to sort of vanilla Abrahamism. then the more traditionalist Parthians tries to reverse many of the reforms and also failed.
there had been an attempt by the Seleucids to "Hellenize" Zoroastrianism, which in practice meant trying to superimpose a bunch of misconceptions Plato had about Babylonian religion on top of Mazdaism. this led to a serious breakdown in the religious order.
