Very excited to share our brand new paper "Self-esteem modulates the similarity of the representation of the self in the brains of others."

We show brain patterns for self are reflected brain-to-brain in those of our peers & are influenced by self-evaluative attitudes

Self-esteem modulates the similarity of the representation of the self in the brains of others - Communications Psychology
Using a round-robin design, this study replicated the “self-recapitulation effect” (where neural representations of the self are similar to those in close others’ brains) and revealed how self-esteem ...

There is a fractal self-similarity between the desire to control women and the desire to control the earth.

A little shameless self-promotion: CARP does very well!

in a lot of ways, there's a scale-invariant similarity between systems -- from interpersonal dyads to polities -- with no ability to self-determination and no way to get rid of dysfunctional power arrangements. the only way out is the worst case scenario

The right is coherent (in the complex systems meaning of coherence, with a high degree of fractal self-similarity) - they treat nature as they treat women as they treat immigrants...as objects to dominate.

Self-similarity or fractal patterns explain how similar shapes repeat across different scales in nature, showing that simple principles can generate complex structures in both the universe and living systems.

"No similarity between the clear-thinking, self-governing stocks that sired the American people and this stream of irresponsible and broken wreckage that is pouring into the lifeblood of America the social and political diseases of the Old World."

#Ferns are an example of #fractals in #nature, showing self-similarity, where the overall structure is repeated in smaller scales.

Coincidentally, a nice illustrative demo of “AI” not understanding anything (left) and a human having understanding (right)

this too is Ising model (self similarity at different scales)
it has been clear to me since at least the late '90s that the dysfunctions of online spaces are fundamentally fractal--self similar, repeating, visible at any scale you care to investigate--enough so that I'm always kind of surprised when people don't see it that way.

NEW SMR! This week? Penguins! As far as the eye can see! Very p-p-p-pissed off 'guins, locked, loaded and ready for war!

Our definitive take on Trump's "Tariffic" act of National Self Harm which bears absolutely no similarity to BREXIT! At all.

It is, I think - probably a universal human thing - and expressed similarly with teenagers all exploring themselves coming into adulthood and SO MUCH similarity before they drift off into their own selves. Finding a self that's presumed all-self before realising it's a stepping stone to actual self.

Fantastic thread breaking down the similarity (and untruth) in the positions of both AI doomers and AI boosters and both have strong self interest in promulgating the myth of total AI power.
AI Doomerism has been in the news lately, especially with the loud, viral resignation of Jacob Coxon from Anthropic.

Maybe I've missed it, but I haven't seen any statements from CEOs and other execs who are more on the AI Booster side of the ledger.

The lack of self awareness actually cements the similarity even further, actually.

The phenomenon of self-similarity describes repeated patterns across scales. Similar forms appear in nature, space, and the human body, produced by simple laws without implying a literal connection between systems.
