#semanticscholar
SemanticScholar Paper Finder convinced me a carefully tuned specialist system can still beat a generalist system, even in AI. Every chatbot gives me buzzy tangentially related refs, while only SSPF actually picks and explains the most relevant. It’s enough to un-bitter-lesson me a bit tbh.

Mela: "Die COVID-19 Impfstoffe sind die inzwischen mit am besten erforschten Impfstoffe."

Schwurbi: "Beweise das!!!"

But one also wonders why @ai2.bsky.social 's #SemanticScholar is indexing rando's websites like this.

I mean, I can see why you might want to catch pdves that authors post of their *own* papers, but that's not what's going on here.

Noticed something on about @ai2.bsky.social 's #SemanticScholar today -- for some reason the page for Bender & Koller 2020 has among its pdf links a link to the personal webpage of Gwern

Wonderful rstudio integration also. With betterbibtex Rmd/quarto is a joy. Zotero is open source. Some nice community plugins for Inciteful, semanticscholar, etc.

I haven't used the Semanticscholar pdf reader a lot, but knew it has a highlighter. But now they have AI based auto-highlights!! Seems really rad, I will start using it in my workflow and report back if it's useful as I start to use it!

Well thanks for clarifying at least. Pretty remarkable that he's written papers on covid given that his last paper listed on SemanticScholar is from 2016. How remarkably prescient he must be!

🔬 New open-source tool: LitMonitor

Automated literature monitoring with #SemanticScholar + #AI evaluation. Finds new papers weekly, evaluates them against your hypotheses, detects contradictions to your theory.

Includes an AI setup prompt – no coding needed.

I just cut off SemanticScholar from one of our sites since they were disobeying robots.txt.

Wow! I had an excellent time talking about #ChatGPT, #SemanticScholar, #Perplexity, and #research of many types, as well as #informationliteracy. Who knew that a hour and a half could go by so quickly!? #aisky #edusky #ailiteracy #skybrary

Idk I think libgen is just LLAMA (confirmed) so far, no?

And as part of my recent project, I incidentally found out that ArXiv is SHOCKINGLY small — about ~3M preprints (so lots of trash, too) vs. 12M papers on JSTOR and 200M (!) papers on SemanticScholar.

The tool attempts to extract a .bib file from an ACL-formatted PDF and then cross-references those items with SemanticScholar, OpenAlex, DBLP, etc. If you have keys for those services, it uses them and goes faster. The PDF-to-bib is only an best-effort, so there's definitely mistakes

20 years of #GoogleScholar, holy cow. It’s all nice and weird but what happens when they pull the plug of this very much neglected project? #google #tech

Shooting for new public infrastructure would be nice, and there are interesting things out there like OpenAlex or SemanticScholar. #degoogling

Thanks Dean! We’re self-hosting the data, so no api calls for us, we periodically update this data. We use a combination of OpenAlex and SemanticScholar

Next talks about recommenders based on seed citations @RsrchRabbit and @SemanticScholar recommendations. Again, usual issues for SR. Generally these tools were never meant for SR process. Except maybe @elicitorg new Systematic review process workflow.... (4)

It seems to be thoughtfully designed (with a long article explaining the considerations), follows academic practices, and simply is genuinely helpful. https://allenai.org/blog/paper-finder It builds on #semanticscholar and verifies #genai output against an actual database of academic […]

9/15 Everyone knows SemanticScholar, but don't sleep on its improvements and power.

Searches that get what you mean, not just what you type. The tool has been getting bigger and better since its inception, and it's one of the best Google Scholar alternatives on the market.
