They tend to grow much taller when their roots aren't inhibited by pavement, but S. sempervirens & S. gigantea both seem to grow just as large, in general. Dwarfism is common in pavementplants in general.

"If thunder were a tree, it would be a Redwood. A deep, rolling crescendo you feel in your bones, your soul. The stump of a Redwood is that thunder far in the distance you're not certain you heard, but is ever present." -mick

The image shows a lush old-growth forest featuring towering coast redwood trees (Sequoia sempervirens) with reddish-brown, fibrous bark, a large mossy root burl or fallen stump in the center, and a dense undergrowth of vibrant green sword ferns.

It shouldn't be surprising that Saltmarsh #Goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens) is one of the only plants thriving where they piled salt. Shot yesterday off Columbus Boulevard.

#Botany Perfoliate: leaves that subtend an inflorescence are joined together. E.g., Coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens), a bine (not a vine) native to eastern North America, attracts Hummingbirds with its flowers & Cardinals with its fruit. greengardeningmatters.blogspot.com/2025/08/cora...
Photo of a vine with a group of yellow & orange berry-like fruit on a stem & 2 leaves joined together are below the fruit. More vines and green leaves are in the background. The 2 joined leaves are labeled "Perfoliate leaves" Other text says "Coral honeysuckle Lonicera sempervirens"

Today’s tiny magical botanical
Tiny watercolor sketch of salt-marsh or seaside goldenrod with small yellow flowers and lance-shaped leaves. Text surrounding it reads: Solidago sempervirens, “Eustochium’s Rod”; “wondergraut”; one of 60+ spp in North America; precaution, good fortune; excellent source of yellow dye; “I make whole”; points to hidden treasure. The symbols for the planet Venus and the element of air are on the left hand side

#Notebook Chronicle Go-To w/ Mohawk paper, dotted & Col-o-ring swatch booklet #FountainPen Sailor hocoro - grey, F #30inks30days Colorverse Blood Falls Open notebook with handwritten text from the post at top of the page with additional text: “In European folklore, it was said to be one of the many toxic herbs used in witches’ flying ointment, as it could grant invisibility and was considered to be an evil omen as it grew in secluded places. In ancient Greece and Rome, it was used to relieve madness. This ‘medicine’ came from the myth or legend that Melampus observed the effect that eating hellebore had on goats. He used their milk to treat the ‘mental derangement’ of the daughters of the King of Argos. You are, I suppose, no longer mad if you are dead. The herbalist John Gerard scoffed at people who strewed or perfumed their houses with hellebore to keep away evil spirits. In German and English folklore, black hellebore was seen as an herb of purity, associating it with Agnes, a virgin saint. It was planted by the front door or the dried root sprinkled around the house to keep evil spirits at bay. Black hellebore had to be gathered ritually both to be effective and to protect the person collecting it. Different sources emphasize different steps, but in short, one should eat garlic and drink some wine beforehand, go barefoot and clad in a white robe. Draw a circle around the plant with a sword, turn toward the east to offer prayers to Apollo and Aesculapius, pluck it from the ground with the right hand, then under the cover of the robe, convey it to the left hand. Leave an offering of bread and wine and look out for eagles.” — Victoria Raschke (me!), A Witch’s Book of Days, Chicago, 2026. Below the text is a card with an illustration of a feminine figure with a garland of hellebore for hair & the symbols for Venus, Saturn, Mars, Water & Poison; a gray plastic dip pen; a swatch of brownish red ink with green sheen; and a droplet-shaped bottle of same.
