Each of the five teacups has a landscape with an architectural structure and some human activity. This tea set has a side-handled pot called a kyūsu, used for steeping, straining, and serving tea. Unlike some others, this set also has a yuzamashi, a container used to cool boiled water to just the right temperature for the best flavor when steeping. Seifū Yohei III’s painting teacher, Tanomura Chokunyū (1814–1907), made a visual record of famous sencha events that shows how these kinds of porcelains fit with objects such as a stove and kettle to form a complete set of utensils for tea preparation, and with ensembles of decorative objects meant to inspire creativity

In their motifs, they are quite similar to an incense burner by Yohei III (see CMA 2022.180), but the flowers are even more simple in design, with no open circle at the center.

Sencha was favored by bunjin in Kyoto and Osaka, who adopted this Chinese custom as part of their cultural pursuits. Though less formal than the Japanese tea ceremony, sencha still involved the display of cherished items. Due to the scarcity of Chinese antiquities, substitutes like the Gu-shaped Flower Vase (CMA 2022.224) were highly sought after. Bowls for serving sweets, such as this one, were commonplace at sencha gatherings.

Notes on today’s tea: I actually had 3 Japanese teas: the Kabuse Saeakari, Gyokuro & Genmaicha (a blend of sencha & toasted rice) I’ve found with these greens I get only one good brew from each, unlike Chinese greens where I get 5. Also, it’s important to eat before drinking these greens.

This one sits on three sturdy legs, one of which bears the artist’s seal on its face. A horizontal rectilinear opening above this leg allows air to circulate into the lower part of the brazier. The top part is outfitted with three prongs onto which the kettle can be lowered; below them is a basin, perforated with circular holes, that holds the charcoal fuel. The brazier is decorated under the crackled transparent glaze with a design of old coins in iron oxide. The motif is cleverly chosen, for most older coins are round with a central hole, often square, which echoes the cylindrical form of the brazier with its rectilinear “wind gate,” or fūmon.
