Had the odd comment mentioning “sentimentality” in the Sony piece and listen: sentimentality is the point. Part of this is just about the fact we’re losing one of the final touchpoints of another world. It’s right to want to rage against that.
My parents were low income so I often just browsed game shops as a kid. Sometimes mum let me get a game. It'd cost her whole day's wage and a chunk of our rent. Dad once told me to check under the car seat and Pokemon Red was there in a bag. Ownership isn't the only thing we lose with physical media

I am fighting sentimentality about the past but holy fuck do I hate everything about the world we are being plunged into

Hell no to revisionist sentimentality about 9/11 bringing Americans closer together. Living through that time sucked and we've never escaped the ugly aftermath.

people often confuse sentimentality with kindness. being sentimental is easy and common. being kind is hard and rare

Sandman really loading up the sentimentality by getting introduced by Jack

Donald Trump on his son Don, Jr., who is just about to get married: "He’s a person I’ve known for a long time."

I'm not crying—you're crying!—at such touching, personal sentimentality. #Sociopaths

I've never thought there was a bad time to be honest about the fact that a horrible person is/was horrible. But after this week's whitewashing of Kirk by the media and political commentariat, it feels not just permissible but essential to fight both sentimentality and dishonesty at top volume.

I think I'm allowed a little sentimentality for once:

yay!

The combo of macho-ness and nauseating sentimentality is a particularly repellent American import

I’m fascinated by metal’s blend of menace and sentimentality, its sweet reverence for its elders
Black Sabbath and their mates just raised a little shy of $200m for Parkinson’s and children’s hospitals with their gig.

That big goofy soft heart at the middle of all the panto aggro. So much nicer than the dull shopping centre punch-up masculinity of mainstream bloke rock.

Metal’s lovely, innit?

It's either a sign of the times or a symptom of my middle aged sentimentality, but I'm always moved by the 'loved and wanted ' line. I love seeing it all over the city.
London stands in solidarity with our LGBTQIA+ community. You are, and will always be, loved and wanted in London.

Proud to host my annual Pride Reception at Outernet, celebrating the enormous contribution of LGBTQIA+ Londoners.

From @rickperlstein.bsky.social, just the antidote to sentimentality you need!
In honor of the dearly departed, a preview from Chapter Two ("The 9/11 Lobotomy") my forthcoming (hopefully in a year) book THE INFERNAL TRIANGLE: HOW AMERICA GOT THIS WAY.

SNL seems to exist exclusively as a vehicle for sentimentality about SNL.

It's good that people are questioning this administration and its violence. That's good politically. But spare me the sympathy and sentimentality about them feeling betrayed.

Its the sentimentality, not the act.

yes of course these types of protests are cringe, they’re incredibly cringe, all successful propaganda is cringe. and that weepy sentimentality is one of the things that can eventually make people decide it’s worth taking risks against their own safety and security for something more important

"It is not surprising that women writers who are attracted
to Sappho simply because they want to celebrate her gender should produce pretty turgid results. Unmitigated panegyric is seldom fun to read, and sentimentality, even vaguely feminist sentimentality, does not age well."

i think 9/11 jokes and charlie kirk jokes both make the case that a shitload of americans are grossed out by cynically mawkish displays of sentimentality and their response is to be gross in turn because what better to fight grossness than grossness

Sentimentality aside, here's my cat being vaguely interested in it :>
