The Florida Panthers made one of the most surprising decisions of the NHL offseason when they chose not to re-sign franchise goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, ending one of the most successful…

Sergei Bobrovsky, a 37-year-old NHL goaltender with two Stanley Cup championships, has signed a three-year, $21-million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs after being traded by the Florida Panthers. The move comes as the Leafs seek stability following a 10-year playoff drought, having previously traded their only experienced goalie, Joseph Woll. Bobrovsky expressed gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging the Panthers' decision to pursue a different direction. His arrival is seen as a pivotal step for the Leafs' rebuild, with general manager John Chayka emphasizing his impact on the team's stability and consistency. Bobrovsky, who played 50+ games in nine of the last 10 seasons, faced a challenging 2025-26 season with Florida, which missed the playoffs. The Leafs' retooling efforts include acquiring forwards like Jack Roslovic and defenceman Darren Raddysh, along with selecting young talent Gavin McKenna in the draft. Despite his age, Bobrovsky remains committed to the game, calling Toronto 'the capital of hockey' and embracing the challenge of leading his new team to success.

NHL general managers hit the ground running to open free agency Wednesday.

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed veteran goaltender to a three-year contract worth $21 million on Wednesday as one of several moves.
