Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old Long Island architect and father of two, is set to plead guilty to the murders of seven women in the notorious Gilgo Beach serial killings. The crimes, spanning 17 years, targeted primarily sex workers. The plea, confirmed by sources close to the case, would ensure Heuermann spends the rest of his life in prison. The investigation, which began in 2010 after human remains were found along Long Island’s South Shore, faced years of stalled leads and public fascination, inspiring a Netflix film and documentary series. Authorities identified Heuermann as a suspect in 2022 after connecting him to a pickup truck reported at the scene of a 2010 disappearance. Further evidence included cellphone records, internet searches for violent torture content, and DNA obtained from a discarded pizza crust linked to a victim. After his arrest in July 2023, investigators discovered 279 weapons and detailed plans for the murders in his home. A judge previously denied Heuermann's request to suppress the DNA evidence. The sentencing date has yet to be set, and the guilty plea marks a significant closure for victims' families and a decade-long investigation.
