September 1st has never felt like fall to me. Turns out, according to the ecological calendar, the sarotinal season is roughly mid-August to mid-September. The weather tends to be dryer, leaves start turning colors, and birds prepare for migration.

Selendis has six seasons - hibernal, prevernal, vernal, autumnal, aestival, serotinal

But the seasons do not have fixed length or order. Each can last from a few weeks to months, or years in rare cases. And they can come in any order. But each season is common/rare in different places of the world.

They said the Oracle of Light was shaped in her image, that of the first one, the woman who had held back the Light. A long succession of girls had inherited her blonde hair, the supranatural eyes whose glow reflected behind her eyelids—a long line of nesting dolls of which she was the smallest. There was something else they inherited to. Were she to turn around she would see it, the ghostly procession that followed her every step, slightly off beat. She would say it was invisible to all except the girls who bore it, except that wasn't quite right. It was more so that it only appeared to those whom the Oracle had touched. It was a slight, bittersweet thing—to know to whom they spoke of by the shape of her name in their mouth.

Real etymology heads know that serotinal comes from the Latin word serotinus. While serotonin is a combination of the Latin word serum and the Greek word tonos, blood-tone.

Today's Word: Serotinal — belonging to late summer. From Latin serus, late. Its cousin serotinous names pine cones that stay sealed for years and open only in a fire. Same root: late is not lost, it's waiting. Western PA has a week or so of serotinal left.

My world has six seasons:

Hibernal - frigid cold and snowy
Prevernal - chilly and often windy
Vernal - mild weather, often rain
Aestival - warm, sunshine and rain
Serotinal - heat, dry warmth
Autumnal - dry and mild climate

It's somewhat more complex than this, but that is the easy shorthand.

As conversations about community organizing and the importance of art are being had, I'd like to talk about one thing we, as folks in the TTRPG industry, can do:

We can write radically different and better worlds in our games. We can brainstorm & imagine different models of relating to one another.

Conflicts are handled by a council of six community members trained for conflict resolution, called the Adaalat. The Adaalat consists of representatives elected by the city-state at large, each from a different stage of life: prevernal (10-24 years old), vernal (25-39 years old), estival (40-54 years old), serotinal (55-69 years old), autumnal (70-84 years old), and hibernal (85 years and older). A new member of the Adaalat is elected every time a current representative ages out of their stage, passes away, or is otherwise unable or unwilling to continue their duties. The Adaalat addresses conflicts through a process of discussion, mediation, and consequences. During the discussion phase, the Adaalat allows the aggrieved to express themselves in private, including a discussion of what the aggrieved requires or desires to move forward. This phase is tailored to the needs of the aggrieved and may include, for example, inviting healers or other community members to participate. During the mediation phase, the Adaalat speaks to the perpetrator and communicates the harm done and the consequences to be had. The aggrieved chooses whether they wish to be a part of this phase. Notably, the conflict resolution process centers the aggrieved and their needs for restitution. Outcomes are meant to balance the need to support the aggrieved and to give perpetrators consequences while maintaining their autonomy and basic rights as people. Education, at all levels, is provided free and to all who desire it. Education is available in a variety of modes, and no one specific mode is mandatory or privileged above another."
