Pre-Columbian Chavin jaguar claw, circa 1400 to 400 BCE. (North Coast Peru, Chavin) This extraordinary jaguar claw was hand-carved from a human elbow bone and features pointy turquoise claws of brilliant aqua hues and a carved, double-headed serpent design around the wrist. Jaguar imagery symbolized power and might throughout the Pre-Columbian world. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. The bicephalic serpent or dragon was a signifier of high rank in various Pre-Columbian world views.
