Resident Evil (2026): Courier Austin Abrams tries to get his quarry to Raccoon City hospital in Zach Cregger's standalone adaptation of the video game franchise, which runs entirely (and effectively) on straightforward, propulsive game logic to setpiece to setpiece. Not Weapons, but still fun.

i've said before that the US Civil War being primarily formal armies fighting each other in setpiece battles really clouds a lot of americans understanding of what an actual civil war looks like
People don't understand that civil conflict looks like your neighbors dragging you out of bed in the middle of the night and executing you in your living room simply because they're suspicious you might be a political enemy, and it really shows sometimes.

Peak. They pick up from the fairly self-contained first film and build into a new trilogy so effortlessly. Action, direction, sets, and music continue to be some of the best.

This is not a bad thing. But it ends up downplaying the medical queasiness of Body Horror in exchange for the creation of a menacing antagonist. It does not make me scared or sad in the way those 80s movies do. Instead the body horror becomes more of a Mission: Impossible-like spectacle setpiece.

I say this as an actual video game writer: that movie has a weak video game story. it bops around from setpiece to unconnected setpiece, you have no reason to care about the main character except that it's your POV, and the only memorable stuff is the party members who join you for reasons unclear
